The Staff of The News|Updated May 21, 2019

One man was injured in a collision Monday morning that left a houseboat stranded for hours blocking the highway approaching Cannon Air Force Base. The two-vehicle incident took place at 11:40 a.m., when Ricky Lee, 56, of Somerset, Kentucky, "failed to yield" while turning left, westbound, onto U.S. 60/84 from the intersection with Curry Road O, officials said. Lee was driving a 1998 Western Star semi-tractor pulling "an oversized houseboat," measuring almost 75 feet, according...

  • Running just fine

    Peter Stein|Updated May 18, 2019

ALBUQUERQUE - There's gold in these here hills. And every elite track and field athlete in New Mexico descends on Albuquerque amid the Sandia Mountains once a year to find it. Gold in this case is a somewhat metaphoric color, representing the glory sought by every sprinter, every distance runner, every hurdler and jumper, every field athlete that hurls a piece of metal of varying size into the air at the state track and field meet held each May at the University of New Mexico...

  • Five Greyhounds get national invites

The Staff of The News|Updated May 18, 2019

PORTALES — For most of Eastern New Mexico University, this is the slow time. The students that didn’t leave sometime during finals week likely left after graduation ceremonies. But there’s one place where it’s still plenty fast for the green and silver, at least for the five Greyhounds whose seasons are not quite over. A quintet of Greyhounds are getting ready for the Division II national championships, scheduled for Thursday through Saturday at Texas A&M-Kingsville. Heading east this week are sophomore Ivar Moinat in the...

  • Hounds add five to men's basketball fold

The Staff of The News|Updated May 18, 2019

PORTALES — When the Greyhound men’s basketball team was ousted in overtime in their Lone Star Conference tournament opener, the focus had to change quickly. A promising year that ended with the fourth seed, and a mild upset by Tarleton State, meant the Greyhounds went from playoff mode to rebuild mode with five seniors to replace. Coach Tres Segler is optimistic the rebuild mode is going well, as the team made its fifth signing for the 2019-20 season this last week in junior college transfer Yosnier Cobas. Segler said an off...

  • Hounds lock in 2020, 2021 season opponents

The Staff of The News|Updated May 18, 2019

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico coach Kelley Lee has always made a simple case. If the Greyhounds wanted to make the Division II playoffs, it had to play 11 Division II opponents to give itself the best chance. That’s what the Greyhounds now have lined up for the next three seasons, as the non-conference dates were settled for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The games will come against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, which is doing a two-year partnership with the Lone Star Con...

  • Bills show debate over abortion policy still very real

    Rich Lowry|Updated May 18, 2019

Lysistrata, the character from the Aristophanes play of the same name, declared a sex strike to try to stop a devastating war in ancient Greece. Alyssa Milano, the actress and political activist, declared a sex strike to try to stop Georgia from protecting unborn children in the womb. The state just passed and signed into law a so-called heartbeat bill to outlaw abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detectable. This led Milano to conclude that women can’t risk pregnancy until f...

  • Media won't challenge Dems' irresponsible promises

    Updated May 18, 2019

Every time I see the latest economic news, I thank Hillary Clinton. Every time I see those high GDP numbers (up 3.2 percent last quarter), I thank Hillary. Every time I see those record low unemployment numbers for blacks, Latinos and women, I thank Hillary. If she hadn’t been such a horrible candidate in 2016, there’s no telling what sorry state America would be in right now. So thank you, Hillary, for being such a loser. You did your country a greater service than you’ll ever know. I don’t really blame Hillary too much fo...
