    Family and friends said Doris Wall was always active in business and organizations and maybe that’s what kept her healthy enough to reach her 100th birthday Monday. Family and friends gathered at Heartland Continuing Care Center Monday for birthday festivities for Doris Wall of Elida. Wall was born May 29, 1906 on the Tusha Claim, west of Elida, when New Mexico was a territory.     A local man died Saturday evening in an one-vehicle accident on Baseline Road, just east of State Road 467, according to a New Mexico State Police news release. Manuel Torres Garrola, 26, of Portales was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at approximately 6:39 p.m. There were no other passengers in the vehicle, according to the release. Richard Cerda of Clovis, the driver of the vehicle involved in the one-vehicle accident, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at 10:30 p.m. Samuel Galvan of Amarillo, the passenger, was transported to Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.     The Senate Armed Services Committee has voted to end the “10-year rule” used by the government for more than two decades to screen court orders seeking automatic payment of retired pay to former military spouses. The change is one of three adjustments to the Uniformed Services Former Spouses Protection Act (USFSPA) in the Senate’s version of the 2007 defense authorization bill (S 2766).     Several Curry County employees will be smiling all the way to the bank next month because of pay raises. The salary hikes will bring county salaries in line with others for similar positions across the state. A Curry County salary survey found 33 employees’ salaries were at the bottom of the pay scale. The pay raises vary from $138 to $4,000 yearly and take effect on county employees’ June 9 paychecks. The total cost of the raises is $44,488 a year. Curry County employs 134 people.
