  • Clovis schools funded for pre-K program

    Jamie Cushman, Staff writer|Updated May 11, 2018

CLOVIS — Pre-K is coming to Clovis Municipal Schools. The district will receive nearly $1 million in state funds for the 2018-19 school year to provide preschool education for the first time to all 4-year-olds, officials announced on Thursday. New Mexico Education Secretary Christopher Ruszkowski said the state will provide $950,000 to CMS for the pre-K program, part of a $33.6 million state-wide investment — $10 million more than last year. CMS Superintendent Jody Balch said he was unaware of the funding decision until he wa... Full story

  • Carlsbad clobbers Clovis in 6A quarters

    Peter Stein|Updated May 10, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE - The University of New Mexico's Santa Ana Star Field is an impressive baseball facility, with shiny artificial turf, even major-league-style organ music playing between pitches. But that's where the pleasant baseball experience ended for fourth-seeded Clovis in Thursday's Class 6A quarterfinal, as the Wildcats ran head-long into a Carlsbad buzzsaw that wailed on the ball from beginning to end and run-ruled the Wildcats 15-1 in five innings. It was simply a dominan...

  • Despite our knowledge, society more foolish than ever

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated May 10, 2018

Knowledge and wisdom are not the same thing. As has been wisely observed, knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad. On a deeper level ... Knowledge has to do with knowing about created things; wisdom means knowing the Creator. Knowledge means knowing facts about the past in order to make a good grade on your history exam; wisdom means learning the lessons of the past to plot a course for the future. Knowledge knows...

  • Greyhound baseball squad rallies to top Angelo State

The Staff of The News|Updated May 10, 2018

CANYON, Texas — Fourth-seeded Angelo State found just enough heroics in the eighth inning of their Lone Star Conference playoff game with Eastern New Mexico, as Brad Mathiowetz delivered a game-tying two-run homer and the Rams small-balled Michael Urquidi home on two groundouts for a 4-3 lead. Turned out the Greyhounds had a few heroics of their own left over. Nick Ankerman doubled to knot things up again in the ninth, and his Greyhound teammates pushed three more runs in o...

  • Portales drops two of three, ends softball tourney fourth

The Staff of The News|Updated May 10, 2018

RIO RANCHO — Throw the ball. Hit the ball. Catch the ball. Avoid the consolation bracket. Portales did three of those four necessary things to try to stay alive in the Class 4A state softball tournament. But the fourth was a little too much to overcome as the Rams dropped two of three Thursday at Rio Rancho High School. The sixth-seeded Rams fell to second-seeded Bernalillo 12-6 to open Thursday's slate, which meant they'd need to pull off three straight wins to reach the noon...

A total of 115 athletes from LSC member schools - 58 men and 57 women - were selected for either first-, second- or third-team honors based on their finishes at the LSC championship meet last weekend. First-team selections included anybody w...

  • Longtime CMS employee Baca elevated to AD post

    Kevin Wilson|Updated May 10, 2018

CLOVIS — Lonnie Baca was the dark horse of dark horse candidates for the Clovis High athletic director position. In fact, he was initially mentioned only as a finalist for the boys’ basketball coaching job. But Baca applied for both, and his enthusiasm and track record took care of the rest. The 19-year veteran of Clovis Municipal Schools was named to the position Thursday morning. Baca, most recently an assistant under former Clovis boys basketball coach Scott Robinson, was selected from a field of four. “I’ve enjoyed...

  • Texico near three-peat

The Staff of The News|Updated May 10, 2018

RIO RANCHO — Behind one more solid pitching performance and one more offensive clinic, the Texico Wolverines are in a position to win one more Class 3A title. Texico is now one win from a 3A three-peat following an 11-1 victory Thursday over Capitan at Cleveland High School. Texico (26-2) will take the field at Isotopes Park at noon against second-seeded Estancia, which topped Dexter 12-4. The Wolverines split a doubleheader in Texico in late April. Texico dropped the first game 4-1, but took the nightcap 10-0. Junior D...

  • Ram baseball reaches 4A semis

The Staff of The News|Updated May 10, 2018

RIO RANCHO - The Portales Rams found trouble all day in their Class 4A quarterfinal against Santa Fe Indian. Fortunately for the defending 4A champion Rams, they escaped it for the most part and created just enough havoc of their own to eke out a 4-3 victory Thursday at Rio Rancho High School. The Rams (19-10) move on to a 4 p.m. Friday semifinal at the University of New Mexico against top-seeded Hope Christian, which defeated Cobre 15-1 in Thursday's late semifinal. Silver... Full story

  • Isler returns to Clovis as boys basketball coach

    Kevin Wilson|Updated May 10, 2018

CLOVIS — When the Clovis High Class of 2008 holds its 10-year reunion this summer, nobody will be asking Jaden Isler what he's doing these days. They already know. Isler will try to do as a coach what he barely missed doing as a player - put a boy's basketball championship banner in the Rock Staubus Gymnasium rafters for the first time since 1979. Isler, the Wildcats' all-time leader in assists and No. 4 career scorer, was announced Thursday morning as the new coach for the bo... Full story

  • Psycowology: the study of crazy cows

Audra Brown, Down on the farm|Updated May 10, 2018

There are jobs that require one to learn to sense the motivations of other human beings. This is difficult, due to the fascinating complexity and flexibility of the human mind. There are some, I’m certain, who profess to know so much about the inklings of people that they can maneuver and herd them to wherever they deem that they ought to go. I would shed some suspicion on any such claim, claiming that it is likely a situation where expectations and outcome aligned, rather t...

  • Illegal dumping on 'uptick' in county

    David Grieder, Staff writer|Updated May 10, 2018

PORTALES — They say one person’s trash is another's treasure. However, for Roosevelt County lately the trash is more like a hassle, a health threat and an environmental hazard. That’s the message this week from the county’s Board of Commissioners, sheriff and Road Department, which asked the public in a news release for help in curbing the recent rise in illegal dumping. “We started noticing the uptick here in the spring months,” said County Manager Amber Hamilton. “I think sometimes people either don’t look at littering as...

  • Mother left a legacy of faith

    Judy Brandon|Updated May 10, 2018

My sweet mother is in heaven with her Savior, my daddy, our John Scott and my mother’s mother who died when my mother was just 6 years old. She is also with countless family members, friends and the multitude of believers. On this Mother’s Day, it is hard to be objective when it comes to my mother, but I would suggest that she was a powerful example of trusting God with vibrant, powerful, dynamic, believing, and focused faith. When I think of my mother I think of what Paul wro...
