  • Actions speak louder than words

    Wendel Sloan

Several readers have emailed that I am headed to an eternity warmed by, apparently, the mother of all campfires. After telling them I will stock up on wieners and marshmallows, they promise to pray for me. Because I still haven't felt moved to make a leap of faith beyond what is provable, I worry they are not praying hard enough. It's not that I don't appreciate sincere offers of prayer during times of loss and travail — as we all experience — I just want them to be acc...

The junior was among the smattering of storylines for Portales-area schools. Floyd, Elida and Dora boys and girls teams weren't expected to make a grab at a team championship, but Jasso did h...

  • Rams get Saturday split

    Dave Wagner CMI staff writer

Joshua Lucero: PNT correspondent Ram sophomore leftfielder Ray Ornelas grabs a fly ball for an out in the top of the fourth inning of the first game Saturday. Portales survived a wild first-game finish, but the Rams weren't able to put away Bloomfield in Saturday's rain-delayed Class 3A state round-of-16 series. Eighth-seeded PHS saw a seven-run lead get away in the opener, then scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and held on for an 11-10 win before the ninth-seeded Bobcats took the second game 7-2. That forced a... Full story

  • What the heck kind of name is Baxter?

Back in the days before satellite tv, cell phones, video players, Netflix and laptops, many ranchers in the west were isolated from civilization. Most had land line telephone service if they were able to string the phone line along fences from the paved road to the headquarters, which was often miles away. And electricity often came from gas-driven generators. You got mail 3 days a week. I remember when Mr. Simplot bought the Alder Creek Ranch 20 miles west of Denio, Nev., on the Oregon line, 162 miles from Winnemucca, the ne... Full story

  • Mother knows best

    Christina Calloway PNT senior writer

Jamie Wilsher gets no bigger joy than seeing her children grow. She only wants the best for them, to know that they're safe and happy and like most mothers, one of the hardest parts is letting go after seeing that change. But unlike most mothers, Wilsher sees her chicks fly the nest frequently. Unlike most mothers, she has nearly two of every appliance to deal with the ever-changing population of her home. And unlike most mothers, Wilsher isn't the first parent her children have ever had in their lives because she serves as...

  • Lost: Four rules of success

Decades back, in some hotel conference room in some city, a guy who owned the Burlington (Vt.) Free Press lectured to our newspaper management seminar about the Ten Rules of Success. The rules made so much sense I appropriated them as my very own over a period of more than 20 years straight when I taught at the annual New Mexico Press Association summer journalism workshop for high school students. My favorite of the 10, one that occasions the dreaded eye roll among my grandchildren, is Bloom Where You Are Planted. During... Full story

  • Stay-at-home mom position without breaks

    Editorial

Perhaps you've taken part in a conversation that goes something like this: "And … where do you work?" "Oh, I'm just a housewife, a stay-at-home mom." "Must be nice not having to work outside the home." "Well, I suppose that depends on how you look at it. It's nice to be able to take care of my family — even if I don't get paid for it." And that is about where the conversation ends, or where you might want to change the subject in a hurry. On this Mother's Day, it's good to reflect for a moment or two on the myriad jobs mot... Full story
