  • Let 'Dear Bobby' take care of your problems

    Bob Huber

I came out of the closet a few years ago, admitting the authorship of "Dear Abby" columns in newspapers. It began when my identity was exposed by a composing room boo-boo that placed my picture over a "Dear Abby" column. It turned out to be beneficial, however, because I no longer have to pretend to be a humor columnist, hiding my real name, Abby, under a bushel. It could have been worse. I might have been a cigar-smoking, bald headed lady with big ears writing under the nom de plume "Bob Huber." (That’s so complicated,...

  • Yes, there are reasons for having a leap year

    Jim Lee

Another leap year has leapt upon us. As always, the occasion causes me to scratch my rapidly graying cranium in profound confusion. I have a difficult time struggling to understand calendar stuff. Why do we need an extra day in February every few years, and why is February shorter than the other months anyway? Another complication is that people in charge of such matters decided to go with a different calendar over 400 years ago. From 46 B.C. to 1582 the Western world used what we call now the Julian calendar. Supposedly,... Full story

  • Judge says drug court important

    Darrell Maurina

The judicial district covering Curry and Roosevelt counties is one of only three in the state with no type of drug court for nonviolent offenders. Ninth Judicial District Judge Teddy Hartley would like to change that. Drug court is a program that imposes strict probation conditions and mandatory treatment and work programs on nonviolent drug and alcohol offenders. It also offers the opportunity to avoid jail time. “I personally believe this is a very, very, very important project and I think when you see the results,... Full story

The state’s top boss has signed a bill that he and his backers say will help prevent bases from being closed. On Friday, Gov. Bill Richardson signed a bill that will eliminate the state’s compensating tax for research in New Mexico by Department of Defense contractors. He signed the bill and other legislation that will provide tax incentives to businesses that are able to...

  • Athletics benefit college

    Kevin Wilson

High school soccer was a way of life for Anna Funck less than two years ago. She knew that college soccer could be the same. “It had always been an option since I started high school,” said Funck, a freshman who scored three goals in the inaugural season for Eastern New Mexico University. While college soccer was always an option, ENMU wasn’t an option until Travis McCorkle recruited Funck as a senior out of Amarillo High. Funck isn’t sure what the future holds for her or her Zia teammates, but she knows she would...

  • Greyhounds take three from Cameron

The Greyhounds finished off their weekend on a sour note, but their pitching gave them enough for a series win over Cameron. The visiting Aggies routed Eastern New Mexico 19-7 in Saturday’s nightcap to keep from getting swept in the four-game Lone Star Conference crossover series. In the previous three games, all Greyhound wins, the Hound pitching staff allowed five runs on 17 hits. Saturday’s second game saw Cameron (7-5) tally 19 runs on 22 hits. “They’re good, they can hit,” Greyhound coach Phil Clabaugh said.... Full story

  • It takes passion to gamble on a make-or-break film

The death of passion, or so it appears; mediocrity seems to be overtaking society. Now, when someone does something with passion that is intended for the positive, he’s criticized, insulted, and slandered. It seems like most folks these days aren’t passionate about anything — not even their work, and that used to be the old standby. Mel Gibson is passionate about telling the true story of a man named Jesus of Nazareth. How passionate is he? He was willing to spend millions of his own dollars to produce and market the...
