    Updated May 4, 2019

My name is Layne Norris. I am the owner of Norris Electric. I am proudly married to Shelly Norris, my best friend, for almost 34 years and the proud dad to Austin and Spencer Norris. I am the son of the best parents, Bob and Barbara Norris. What would you do if you won $1 million? I would give it to works that further the cause of Christ. Also important, since it was won and not earned, it would not be mine to keep. What is your most prized possession? The many freedoms that...

  • Portales third in 4-4A

The Staff of The News|Updated May 4, 2019

PORTALES - The Portales Rams, knowing they were on the softball playoff bubble, played a tight first game and more relaxed in the second. On the hill, however, Wendy Baeza was consistently good - good enough to hold Goddard to two runs on six hits in a 2-1, 14-1 doubleheader sweep Friday night at Wheeler Park. Portales (14-12, 5-7) finished third in District 4-4A, and expects to receive one of Class 4A's 16 seeds in Sunday's selection meeting. The top eight seeds will host...

  • Heath claims singles

The Staff of The News|Updated May 4, 2019

CARLSBAD — The Clovis Wildcats didn’t obliterate the field at the District 4-5A tennis individual championships, but they undeniably made their mark with four players punching their way into the Class 5A state bracket. David Heath posted a 6-1, 7-5 win over Hobbs’ Ethan Jimenez to win the singles championship, and the Wildcats got two other state qualifiers in singles and doubles. Sumito Richeson and Brandon Heath took third in the doubles competition, winning two of their three matches, while Seth Romero claimed a pair...

  • Wolverines sweep Lions

The Staff of The News|Updated May 4, 2019

SANTA ROSA — As the end of its regular season neared, Texico’s baseball team added a sweep of Santa Rosa to its 2019 résumé. Friday, the Wolverines took the two-hour trek to Santa Rosa and blanked the Lions 5-0, making it 17 straight scoreless innings against their District 7-2A rivals. The victory came just 10 days after Texico swept a home doubleheader against Santa Rosa — 12-2 in six innings and 10-0 in five. The Lions plated two runs in the top of the first inning of that chilly twinbill opener last week, but haven’t...

  • A community prayer

CLOVIS — Over 150 area residents, church and city officials lined Main Street outside the Curry County Courthouse on Thursday for the National Day of Prayer. Participants prayed for seven individual aspects of the country — government, military, business, education, church, media and family — along with a closing prayer and the 2019 national prayer for America, which was recited at National Day of Prayer gatherings held throughout the country. The following are excerpts from...

  • Softball swan song

The Staff of The News|Updated May 4, 2019

CLOVIS - It started so well for the Clovis softball team. Mid-to-late March seemed like break-up-the-Lady-Wildcats time, as they soared to a 3-0 start, quickly surpassing the program's win total in each of the prior two seasons. But the Clovis team was young, the inevitable bumps in the road were met, and the Lady 'Cats finished their 2019 season at 5-19, closing it out Friday with two home losses to District 4-5A opponent Roswell - 17-6 in the first game and 3-0 in the...

  • 'Cats finish strong

The Staff of The News|Updated May 4, 2019

CLOVIS - Clovis' baseball team may have played its last game of 2019. And if that is indeed so, the Wildcats exited in style Friday. Hosting District 4-5A opponent Roswell at Bell Park, the 'Cats pulled off a doubleheader sweep by rallying in both games, beating the Coyotes 4-1 in the opener and 5-3 in the nightcap. With that pair of wins, Clovis finished its regular season at 9-17. An encouraging end, but perhaps not enough to crack the state playoff top 16. "I don't know,"...

  • Moinat leaves mark in track and field

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated May 4, 2019

PORTALES — Ivar Moinat shares a name with Ivar the Boneless, a character from the T.V. show ‘Vikings’. Moinat isn’t as mean as the T.V. guy, but can be ruthless when burning up the collegiate track scene, at least from a competitive standpoint. Moinat — a Netherlands native, Eastern New Mexico junior, and middle distance standout — was named an indoor track All-American in March and took third at last weekend’s Drake Relays, a prestigious outdoor event in Des Moines, Iowa. Friday night, with Eastern New Mexico hosting the L...

  • Clovis arrests yield Portales gun

    David Grieder|Updated May 4, 2019

CLOVIS — Law enforcement officers on Thursday unexpectedly came into new evidence tied to last month’s Portales homicide. Prosecutors said Daniel Harrison, 38, was found in possession of the 9mm Jimenez handgun at play in the April 7 shooting death of Adam Holts in Portales. Harrison and another man were arrested outside a Clovis gas station Thursday on unrelated charges. Investigators described Holts' killing as the deadly outcome of an armed robbery effort to recover that same handgun. Four people have been arrested and...

  • I've fallen in love with Helvetica all over again

    Karl Terry|Updated May 4, 2019

It’s been said that Helvetica is like water. I recently learned they’ve redesigned my drink of choice when it comes to typefaces. The font has been one of the most ubiquitous in graphic design since Swiss designers created it in 1957. That makes it two years older than yours truly. That means it might have been used on my birth certificate (I doubt it) and it could be used on my tombstone. The sans serif Helvetica got its last redesign in 1982, about the time I started wor...
