  • Windscorpions a value to nature

Not long ago I received a telephone call from my college buddy, Guido Zecca, who resides in Gallup. He said, "Hey, Ton, I have something I want you to identify." My comment was, "Send it to me." Guido stated that the creature he mailed causes great fear to Navajo Indians. In fact, they believe the critter is a bad omen, sent by a witch to cast evil on the person it bites. Upon receiving the specimen, I identified it as a Windscorpion. I have observed them several times in Roosevelt and Curry counties. Other names for the...

  • I will never forget you

    Joan Clayton

Editor's note: Joan Clayton's husband, Emmitt, died on Wednesday. She pays tribute with Emmitt's first-person account of his life. "Please take care of my son." I well remember at 4 years old my mother's dying prayer. I guess you could say I grew myself up. Having an alcoholic dad didn't help. Many times an aunt or a neighbor invited me to eat, and did I ever eat. I worked my way through high school doing odd jobs I could find and God always provided. Whenever I felt discouraged I remembered mother's prayer. Because of those...

  • My Turn - Disney still teaching values

    Alisa Boswell

If I were a parent, I would probably be strict about the television shows and movies that my children would be allowed to watch. Many of today's generation of parents are relaxed with the entertainment guidelines they set for their children. It impacts a small child when they are already watching rated R movies and Jersey Shore-type television at 5 years old. Call me old fashioned, but I grew up on shows such as Any Griffith, Alf and Full House, all of which emphasized good family values and moral lessons to be learned. It...

  • Blackwater Draw site host to open house

    Christina Calloway PNT senior writer

George Crawford says he expects "children" ages 8 to 80 lining up for atlatl (spear) throwing this weekend at Blackwater Draw just six miles north of Portales. Sure the fun stuff will attract people to Saturday's Prehistoric New Mexico Open House, but Crawford, Eastern New Mexico University's Blackwater Draw Site director and archaeologist, said the open house is held to bring awareness to New Mexico's contribution to the nation's prehistory. • Local doesn't allow deafness to dictate life

    Jillian Holbert PNT staff writer

Editor's note: This is the first in a series of features about the deaf community. An interpreter was used to speak with Jerradan Jones. Jerradan Jones hasn't let being deaf get in the way of living a normal life. Jones works a full-time job at his father's auto shop, raises his son, and spends time with his friends riding dirt bikes and playing video games. Darynda Jones was first clued into her son's deafness when she dropped some pans when he was sleeping in his crib close by and he didn't wake up. He was a month old. It...

  • Order without coercion is possible

    Kent McManigal

I have heard people say there is no point in being libertarian because there will never be a libertarian society. Or because there will always be bad guys who will take advantage of others. Or because someone will always be setting up some form of government. That seems to be a myopic view of the situation to me. I'm not libertarian because of a belief that the future won't have problems. I am libertarian because I know it is always wrong to initiate force — to throw the first...
