APITAN — The Portales Rams jumped all over Capitan in the first inning on Saturday, then had to hang on late for the win. They had no such problems in the second game, following up their 12-9 squeaker with an 11-1 blowout of the Class 1A Tigers in the nightcap. Capitan (11-4) pulled to 10-9 in the fourth inning of the opener, but freshman Grant Wagner pitched 3 1/3 innings of one-hit shutout ball to preserve the win. He struck out five and walked none. "Grant's been doing that all year," PHS coach Art Ontiveros said. "He...
PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University's baseball team combined solid pitching with just enough offense on Saturday to end its 10-game losing streak in a big way. CMI correspondent: Joshua Lucero ENMU shortstop Brett Ackerman can't quite come up with a smash into the hole by West Texas A&M's Tyler McKnight on a second-inning single in the opener of Saturday's Lone Star Conference baseball doubleheader against West Texas A&M at Greyhound Field. Sophomore Ryan Boydstun and...
One of the biggest upheavals in food production in the last ten years was the result of one of the tiniest imaginable scares. It would be comparable to one single Aborigine threatening the U.S. with a fly swatter, and our government issuing every homeowner a .50 caliber machine gun to defend themselves! Peruse any Ag-media today and you will see multiple companies offering age and source verification for cattle. The biggest impetus for this technical, political and management service was the BSE / Mad Cow scare. It began in...
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has extended the voluntary claims process for Hispanic and women farmers and ranchers who claim discrimination by the USDA in past decades. Those who file a claim by May 1 will be considered for a cash payment or for loan forgiveness. According to John Padalino, the USDA rural utilities acting administrator, in order to receive a claims package, each Hispanic or female farmer and rancher needs to prove that the USDA denied his or her application for loan or loan servicing assistance for...

Lane Grau of Grady has sold about 30 percent of his cattle over the last couple years because his land could not support grazing. CNJ staff photo: Kevin Baird Lane Grau kneels down to get a better look at the dead turf on his property. He estimates one-third of the turf on his rangeland has been reduced to a dead-gray stubble. Grau estimates that a third of his rangeland is dead turf due to the drought. According to the USDA Weekly Crop & Weather Report, Curry County is experi...
Steve Kush, the suspended executive director of the Bernalillo County Republican Party, is right about two things. His comments regarding women who voiced viewpoints with which he disagreed at a County Commission meeting on raising the minimum wage were insensitive and "moronic." Now, if Kush won't resign, he should be fired. Because it is in the best interest of the GOP, and of informed debate, to have leaders who focus on issues important to voters — not on lame attempts to appear hip and witty on social media by posting...
The answering machine blinked ominously. "Hey, little feller, we need to chat. Heh. Heh. Heh." Just my luck. It was my friend Barney and he was clearly well in into cocktail hour. Barney has this screwy notion New Jersey is the world center of intellectual eminence and cultural superiority. He thinks New Mexico is still a stagecoach stop. You never know what's on Barney's mind. I was quickly going to find out. "Horse slaughter!" he barked into my ear, with nary a hello. "How ya doin?'" "Not a horse slaughter plant in the...
Like most Americans, I am concerned about deficit spending. Recently, after downing a couple of Great Value strawberry sodas and two Banquet chicken pot pies while watching reruns of "Cops," I was inspired to brainstorm ways to raise revenue without raising taxes. My sodium-and-sugar-addled ideas include allowing citizens to purchase yearly permits for: Driving over the speed limit: $300 for each 10 MPH over on interstates; $25 on farm-to-market roads; and $5 through trailer-park yards of KKK members. $500 to post on...
Local law enforcement and corrections officials shouldn't be responsible for mentally ill residents. Too often, though, in eastern New Mexico and across the state and nation, mental patients are locked in our jails because we don't know what else to do with them. A better idea than a jail cell is needed. Last Sunday's Clovis News Journal examined an extreme example of a man who has been jailed, then released — repeatedly — into society, only to return to spend more time behind bars. The individual, Alex Romero, is known...
LAWTON, Okla. — After being eliminated from a chance to make the Lone Star Conference softball tournament in Friday's doubleheader loss, Eastern New Mexico University just couldn't get up for Saturday's season finale. Cameron scored six runs in the first inning, shut down a potential comeback bid in the third and went on to an 11-3 win to complete a series sweep. The game was called after 4 1/2 innings because of the eight-run rule. All nine Aggies in the starting batting order hit safely as Cameron (17-30, 10-17 LSC)...
