    Staff and wire reports

Representatives from Raton, Tucumcari and Lordsburg told New Mexico racing commissioners on Thursday they are interested in applying for the state's sixth racino license, even though discussion of that license had been removed from the meeting agenda. The long-delayed and still unfinished La Mesa Racetrack in Raton earlier this week appealed the loss of its racing license to the state Supreme Court, putting the availability of that license in limbo. An unnamed group has also expressed interest in opening a racino in Clovis.... Full story

Downtown revitalization is in full swing in Clovis and Portales, and local MainStreet programs have been hard at work behind the scenes to help revamp these historical areas and bring fresh, fun events to area residents. While the constant road construction in Portales has brought its fair share of headaches for drivers, MainStreet is using it to its advantage. CMI correspondent: Joshua Lucero Foley Bluegrass Band performed at the Yam Theatre last August as part of the Yam's...

  • In search of ponies: Kicking bucket not always bad

    Sharna Johnson Local columnist

When the youngsters became the proud owners of a new colt, they set out on a mission to bond with him. Teaching him tricks became part of the fun, as they coaxed him to interact and do things in exchange for affection and treats. Mastering the challenge of standing on his hind legs was a little awkward for the uncoordinated colt, but when the children discovered they could help, the trick become even more interesting. Coaxing him and helping him to get his front legs up high enough, they discovered he could indeed stand on... Full story

  • McGee: No more shuckin' and/or jivin' for me

    Grant McGee Local columnist

Going through my record collection the other day I ran across a 1982 album by Willie Nelson and the late, great Waylon Jennings titled "WWII." The first track on the LP is titled "Mr. Shuck and Jive." "Well, I can't say that anymore," I thought to myself. It turns out I'm not allowed to say "shuck and jive" because I'm from one ethnic/racial background and the phrase apparently originated with another. So if I say "shuck and jive" I am being politically incorrect. This came up within the past few months because some... Full story
