Watching the news from Albuquerque, or in fact from any place, can often make you more informed than you wish you had to become. Case in point — the story this week concerning an 89-year-old Navajo man, one of the original Code Talkers, who passed away in an Albuquerque hospital after spending a month in a coma, the result of a beating when someone forced their way into his home and robbed him. I would rather not know this story; I would rather not know that people who would do this sort of thing existed. It so happens t... Full story

This past week has been heartbreaking for our country because of the loss of life and injury of innocent people. With coverage of the bombings in Boston and the explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, like everyone else I've been glued to the news coverage of the breaking news. The more I've viewed of various media the last few days the more I wonder if the immediacy we have these days is really all that much better than ink on newsprint. During my lunch hour Monday I walked by the bedroom TV that had been left on a 2...

"That is the largest classroom building on campus," Gamble said. Like ENMU, Clovis Community College... Full story
After 14 hours of relentless walking around Eastern New Mexico University's Greyhound Arena, participants in the Portales Relay for Life finally got to stop at 5 a.m. Saturday. With 37 teams and over 370 participants, the Relay raised about $9,000 so far. Mark Clark, co-chair for the event, said money raised from the silent auction has not yet been accounted for and it is likely the total will be closer to $20,000, about what it was last year. PORTALES — On a day where 49 runs were scored, the last two by Texas A&M-Kingsville proved to be just enough. Matt Perez hit an RBI fielder's choice with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the ninth, and James Black added an RBI single as the Javelinas held on for a wild 18-16 win over Eastern New Mexico University and a sweep of Saturday's Lone Star Conference baseball doubleheader at Greyhound Field. Mike Torrez, a 6-foot-7 forward from Rio Grande H.S. in Albuquerque, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball next season at Eastern New Mexico University. Torrez averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 49 percent from the floor and 72 percent from the free throw line last season for the Ravens, earning second-team All-Metro honors in Albuquerque. "He brings an ability to score … inside and outside," ENMU coach Andrew Helton said. "We feel strongly that he will be a very good player over the c...
A recent editorial in the Fairbanks (Alaska) Daily News-Miner newspaper pointed out the irony that the Air Force has grounded F-16s at Eielson Air Force Base and several other installations across the country. "So the world's mightiest military cannot keep its pilots in top form," the editorial read. "They will go without real flight experience until at least Oct. 1, the beginning of the next fiscal year. "Even more ironic, it appears this circumstance has been created by a budgeting rule rather than a shortage of money." Can...
After another recent disaster at the Clovis Municipal Golf Course, a friend and I swung by Cotton Patch to dissect why our swings looked more like we were in a batter's box than a tee box — and to wash down something hearty with tea on the rocks. Before entering, we held the door for an elderly couple shuffling out on a cane and walker, respectively. The man told us there was no point in going in because they had eaten all the food. I laughed, and told him that maybe they would at least let us have their scraps. They were k...
If nothing else, the Eastern New Mexico University softball team can take some solace in the fact it could have won its weekend Lone Star Conference series against Abilene Christian. With the wind blowing almost straight out, it took the Portales bats a while to get going on Saturday. Once they did, there wasn't much stopping them. The Lady Rams pounded out 14 hits — seven for extra bases — and used a six-run fourth to cruise to a 10-0 victory over Clovis at Lady Wildcat Field. Junior catcher Simone Laurenz drove in three runs with two of Portales' six doubles, while freshman Kiersten Ramirez tossed a two-hit shutout. Ramirez also started the damage in... Full story
