  • BNSF official: Too early to pinpoint cause of train derailment

    CNJ staff

A BNSF Railways official said the cause of Wednesday's derailment near the Pecos River Bridge northwest of Fort Sumner — the second in that area in less than a month — is still under investigation. Although both derailments happened during high-wind conditions, about the latest derailment, BNSF spokesman Joe Faust said, "To assume it was wind-related would be premature. It could be any number of things." He cited mechanical failure and human error as possible reasons, but he s... Full story

  • In the midst of terror, hope finds Boston

The terror at the finish of this week's Boston Marathon unsettles us all. Once again, the people of the United States feel exposed — an iconic event marred in the worst way, with twin bombs exploded just as the third wave of marathon runners headed toward the finish. Three people dead, some 175 injured, and so few answers about who did it and why. Yet amid the horror, the country still feels hope. Hope, because of the many men and women on the ground who ran toward danger to help, rather than away, to safety. Hope, because o...

  • Do what's right, not what's legal

When a law is silly, good people may break it; when a law is wrong, good people have to break it. I wouldn't tell you what to do, beyond telling you that you probably already know the right thing to do. I will tell you that if I see you breaking silly laws without hurting anyone or their property, I will respect you. But if I see you breaking, or even openly defying, bad laws, I will consider you a true hero. Look at how many heroes from the past are heroes because they broke and defied bad laws. Rosa Parks and Henry David...

  • With Jesus we win

    Joan Clayton

If we stop to think about it, we are blessed, even a tiny complaint is most inappropriate. With so many blessings surrounding me, how dare I be thankless. A grateful heart is a loving heart. My happiness is not in fortune, fame, possessions or any other substitute. These temporary things can be taken away in an instant. The real blessings are your husband, children, family and friends. These are the things to love each day with joy. Every day you and I are leaving memories and those we leave behind will remember what we left.... Full story

  • Magic of Mozart coming to Portales

    Christina Calloway PNT senior writer

The opportunity to hear a 55-piece orchestra, a 175-person choir comprised of students and faculty from two rivalry schools and a classical sound that dates back to the 1700s does not come to Portales often and it's free, says Eastern New Mexico University Associate Professor of Music Jason Paulk. Paulk told ENMU choir members to give the piece "Praise His Holy Name" soul, a more upbeat song of their Mozart's Requiem program when they rehearsed Thursday. Paulk says the concert is a big deal because not only are the ENMU... Full story
