  • Clovis baseball team falls in district opener

    Peter Stein, Staff Writer|Updated Apr 22, 2019

CARLSBAD — Tuesday’s District 4-5A opener for Carlsbad and Clovis seemed like three baseball games rolled into one. Carlsbad won the seven-inning game 15-5 at Clovis’ Bell Park, notching its first district win in the process. But, within that victory seemed to be a trio of mini-games playing out separately. The first stage saw Carlsbad go up 8-0, seemingly on its way to a lopsided win. Clovis won the second stage 5-0, marching steadily along the middle-inning comeback trail and shaving Carlsbad’s lead to just three. Then ca...

PORTALES — In their meeting Tuesday morning, Roosevelt County commissioners got a hands-on, abstract illustration of the sort of work correctional officers do at the local detention center. Roosevelt County Jail Administrator Justin Porter stood beside three detention officers while presenting to the commission on a proclamation declaring the first full week of next month as “National Correctional Employees Week.” The officers passed out individual bottles of soda to the commissioners and county staff, with Porter asking each...

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Apr 16, 2019

CLOVIS — The ongoing school turnaround program at Clovis Municipal Schools has shown that a quick handshake can go a long way. The Clovis Middle School Initiative (CMSI), a school turnaround program in partnership with the University of Virginia, is wrapping up its second of three years and this week CMS officials took stock of how the program has helped teachers and staff connect with students at the district’s three middle schools. “I think everything we have done so far is really geared towards helping principals creat...

    David Grieder|Updated Apr 16, 2019

Editor’s note: Warning to readers: The following story contains graphic accounts. CLOVIS — A Clovis man was arrested Friday on felony animal cruelty charges from an investigation that started late last year. John Davis, 63, was charged in January with extreme cruelty to animals and tampering with evidence, both fourth-degree felonies, and five additional misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals. He entered no plea Monday on all counts and was released that evening on an unsecured appearance bond. In an arrest warrant aff...

  • Udall announcement brought out politics

    Tom McDonald|Updated Apr 16, 2019

Tom Udall’s announcement that he won’t seek another term as U.S. senator really brought out the politics in New Mexico. Already, two Democrats have announced they’ll seek to replace Udall, and there’s plenty of speculation about others interested in vying for the crown jewel of statewide office. Let’s consider only a few. First to announce was U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján, who has come a long way in the 10 years he’s been the House. I remember being wholly unimpressed that first time he ran in 2008, when his father, the late New...

  • Gun laws far overstep their bounds

    Kent McManigal|Updated Apr 16, 2019

“Validly enacted laws.” This is how New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas deceptively characterizes the new anti-gun laws he wants enforced against you. They aren’t validly enacted. They violate the Second Amendment, so they aren’t even laws. You might imagine they don’t violate the Constitution, based on cowardly and dishonest opinions of Supreme Court justices over the decades, but they do. The Second Amendment is clear. It’s even more clear once you’ve read the disc...
