STAFF WRITER [email protected] In her four years playing softball at Eastern New Mexico University, Elizabeth “Lizzy” Velasquez has had to deal with a lot of change. She’s done it all with optimism and a smile. “When I came here, I was an infielder for the first two years,” said Velasquez, who is hitting .294 this season. “But we got some new players and the infield positions became solidified, so I moved to the outfield. I get to play more now, and it’s fun and exciting.” In addition to position changes, she’s also had...

  • Lilacs as tough as early settlers

link Betty Williamson A bit of good news It might seem premature in April to slap a label on the whole year, but I am ready to offer up 2015 as the Year of the Lilac. Judging by the number I’ve seen (and best of all, smelled) in glorious bloom this year, it’s clear others share my appreciation of this hardy shrub. • Death or taxes, which is worse?

Staff writer link Brittney Cannon Two things in life are certain: death and taxes. Which is more pleasurable, though, is still up for debate. I kid, of course — I would rather pay my taxes than die. I’m too young, after all, and have at least three-quarters of my life still ahead of me. But I, honestly, would rather not pay taxes … just don’t tell the IRS. It may be worth it, though, to take a look at what our taxes actually pay for, and how we all as a whole, as a team, b... Full story
