  • I sleep best with sounds of the farm

    Audra Brown|Updated May 21, 2017

Sounds are funny things. They are always there but, depending on what you are used to, you may or may not notice them. Personally, I find the sounds of the city to be less than not-noticeable when I’m in a more urban location and trying to sleep. It’s obviously not the decibel level, as the sounds are often faint, but there is something uncomfortable about the sounds of all those people, doing all their people things. On the other hand, I reckon the sound of a corral full of f...

  • Lady Cats dominate in shot put, discus

    Dave Wagner|Updated Apr 19, 2017

CLOVIS — Clovis High's track and field girls have a nice competition going on in the throwing events. Seniors Brittany Reed and Monay Phillips are going back and forth in discus, and Reed is leading Class 6A in shot put this season. On Thursday, Reed took first place in shot put with a personal-best 38 feet, 9 1/2 inches, while Phillips was fifth. Then in discus competition, she took the lead by one-half inch over Phillips after the preliminary throws. Phillips, though, c...

  • Lady Rams cruise past Raton

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 14, 2017

PORTALES — There may have been some concerns early on in Portales High's girls tennis match against Raton on Thursday when the visiting Tigers forced tiebreakers in two of their three doubles matches. The Rams, however, took all three of those flights, then coasted through the singles play that followed for an 8-1 win at the Bill Wahlman Tennis Center. Sarah Blaeser and Kelly Fraze, playing in No. 1 doubles for the first time together, had the toughest time but pulled a 5-7, 7-6, 6-2 win over Autumn Archuleta and Sarah V...

  • 'Empty' has new meaning for me

    Judy Brandon|Updated Apr 14, 2017

The word empty has a new meaning for me. Many times we throw around the word empty in our everyday talk. The gasoline level’s red light comes on in our cars when we are nearing empty. The consequence if we don’t get gas? Stuck in the middle of heavy traffic or on a desolate road with no help in sight. Sometimes we go to the refrigerator to get milk in the morning and realize the milk cartoon is empty. The consequence of no milk for breakfast? The morning is off to a bad beg...

  • Better a rock than a man with nothing to praise

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Apr 14, 2017

Last Sunday was Palm Sunday, and for centuries many Christians have let that Sunday before Easter carry their minds back to the amazing scene of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the Sunday before he would die. Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a donkey no one had ever ridden, a beast his disciples found just as he had said they would. Our Christmas cards invariably depict Mary, Jesus’ mother, riding a donkey to Bethlehem. It’s not unlikely, though no Gospel speci...

  • Eliminating renewable fuel standard a question of fairness

    Jim Constantopoulos|Updated Apr 14, 2017

Low fuel efficiency, high cost, engine corrosion, rising food prices, world famine, prairie grassland losses, and sinking water tables — these are some of the unintended consequences that the government’s ethanol mandate has spawned in recent years. Now, a coalition of consumer advocates, conservationists, oil companies, grocery manufacturers, and humanitarian advocates is urging Congress to roll back the renewable fuels standard (RFS), which was adopted in 2007 with the goal of reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil. A dec...

  • Javs toss no-hitter against ENMU in opener

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 14, 2017

KINGSVILLE, Texas — For the second time in less than two weeks, the Eastern New Mexico University softball team was the victim of a no-hitter. Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Carlie Clark, who had only two wins this season coming into the game, managed to do the trick on Thursday as the Javelinas beat ENMU 8-0 in the opener of a three-game Lone Star Conference series. The Greyhounds (18-31, 10-15) had six baserunners in the game, including four walks. Others came on a fielder’s choice in which no one was retired, and on a third...

  • Lady Rams notch pair of 12-8 wins at Moriarty

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 14, 2017

MORIARTY — A change of scenery didn’t hurt the Portales High softball team a whole lot on Thursday. With Wheeler Park still too wet to play after Wednesday’s rains, the Lady Rams and Moriarty switched home dates and the Lady Pintos hosted these games. The teams will now play a doubleheader in Portales on April 29. Portales (8-6, 2-0) faced early deficits in both, but rallied for identical 12-8 victories. “I’m proud of the girls,” PHS coach Robbie Crowley said. “It seems they each have their roles change every day, but they...

One of the two batters that did reach for the Pintos (7-11, 1-3) was picked off at first by Lovato, who had a perfect game going through three innings. "Emilio's been battling for us all year...
