  • Reporter's notebook: Bottom of the list

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Apr 13, 2018

New Mexico: Great for green chile, but bad for millennials, according to a recent study. WalletHub has found that in a list of the best states for millennials — which includes the District of Columbia — New Mexico ranks 51. States were ranked — one being the best and 51 being the worst — by affordability, education and health, quality of life, economic health and civic engagement, and New Mexico was ranked in the lower 40s on each category. The District claimed the number one spot with the top rankings in education and hea...

CLOVIS — Employers and prospective employees once again filled the Clovis Civic Center on Thursday for the Eastern New Mexico Spring Job Fair amidst some uncertainty regarding the fair's future. The High Plains has seen some changes to the job market landscape since the Eastern Plains Council of Governments first began organizing the annual event over half a decade ago, so fair organizer Raymond Mondragon said the program will be re-evaluated over the coming weeks. "Six y...

  • Steak's nice, party favors better

    Audra Brown|Updated Apr 13, 2018

The best parties are those with all your friends, with the time and space to have a good time together. But some get-togethers are less personal. Business banquets are an example of such a thing. It might be a feed company looking to explain a new mix of mineral, a bank buying a steak for all the loan-taking farmers and ranchers that it does business with, or one of the equipment manufacturers showing off the tractors that won’t be available used for at least a few more y...

  • Fill your life with the spirit of God

    Judy Brandon|Updated Apr 13, 2018

Jesus, who knows us better than we even know ourselves, warned His hearers about obstructions or sin in one’s heart. He said: “What comes from your heart is what makes you unclean. Out of your heart come evil thoughts, vulgar deeds, stealing, murder, unfaithfulness in marriage, greed, meanness, deceit, indecency, envy, insults, pride, and foolishness. All of these come from your heart and they are what make you unfit to worship God.” (Mark 7:20-23). Further, once these sins...

  • Genuine wisdom rooted forever in God

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Apr 13, 2018

According to the wise man writing in Ecclesiastes 3, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” I like the way Eugene Peterson paraphrases this in The Message: “There’s an opportune time to do things, a right time for everything on the earth.” Yes, and the sage continues in those famous words, “There is a time to be born and a time to die, ... a time to kill and a time to heal, ... a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a...

  • Cats ready for home Relays

    Peter Stein|Updated Apr 13, 2018

CLOVIS — Running and jumping and throwing are pretty much the same here as they are anywhere. Track and field teams are going to compete the best they can, and that won't vary much unless it's on the surface of the moon. Still, Clovis is a little extra excited for today's Wildcat Relays that begin at 3 p.m. The 'Cats finally get to compete at their own digs — the friendly confines of Leon Williams Stadium — for the first time this season. That is a big deal, that is speci...

  • Rams take third in tight Lovington Invitational field

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 13, 2018

LOVINGTON — Finishing last sounds like a bad golf meet, but Thursday was actually a pretty good day for the Portales High boys team. The Rams had all five golfers shoot in the 80s, and finished just four strokes out of first place in the three-team Lovington Invitational field. Janae Hale finished second overall amongst girls golfers on the day. "Our team performance was pretty good under the conditions. We started an hour earlier than usual, to stay ahead of the wind," Rams c...

  • Dora uses big third to top Logan

    Eric Murray|Updated Apr 13, 2018

DORA — Prairie gusts of 30 mph and more couldn't stop Dora from pouring it on Logan in Thursday's A/3A-District 5/6 softball matchup. The Coyotes scored seven runs in the third inning to take the lead for good in a 13-3 victory over the Longhorns. "We just started coming out hitting again," Coyotes coach Benney Tapia said. "We started off slow, but we came out to hit." For the second time in three days, Dora (5-4, 2-2) used one big inning to get things going, breaking the g...

  • Confusion across country about which 'CHS' threatened

    David Grieder|Updated Apr 12, 2018

CLOVIS — Word travels fast these days, but sometimes context happens slowly. That was the case for a number of schools across the country this week after a social media post last week by a Clovis High School student threatening violence at “CHS” spread online to identically-abbreviated high schools, resulting in a flurry of concern for some and closure for others. Locally, the incident was handled quickly after being reported close to midnight on April 5. Clovis Municipal Schools staff were alerted that night to a Snapchat im... Full story

  • Locals weigh in on 'unlucky' Friday the 13th

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Apr 12, 2018

For some, it evokes images of black cats and cracked mirrors; for others, a machete-wielding maniac in a hockey mask. For several High Plains residents, though, Friday the 13th is just another self-fulfilling prophecy. Though it is difficult to determine how the date was cemented as unlucky, a 2017 article by Live Science found that author Thomas William Lawson tied together Friday and 13 — both previously viewed as unlucky — in his 1907 novel “Friday the 13th.” For Portales resident Ose Alli, however, bad luck on Friday...
