  • Ministry to those in need makes impact

    Judy Brandon

I read an article about people who live their lives to help others. This article focused on people from all walks of life and all age groups. These people were of all ages and different ethnicity. They all had different jobs and occupations and lived all over the United States. Yet, the one characteristic they had in common was that they lived to impact the world for good. The article I read had to do with people who minister to others in the 21st century who are poor and...

  • Oklahoma Lane holds many stories

    Don McAlavy

If you don’t know where Oklahoma Lane is, then you’re a newcomer! Yes, that’s right, if you don’t know where Oklahoma Lane is, then you’re a newcomer. Located about six miles east of Farwell, this farming community has generated some “hard to believe, but true” tales. Here are a few samples: “In 1932 when we heard the government was going to pay us for plowing up cotton, my father griped, ‘If they take away our poverty we won’t have anything left.’” That’s right, my dad, H. H. McAlavy, was a farmer: “One year the ground arou...

  • Centennial coin symbolizes county's history

There are surely enough veterans of the Armed Services in this readership, that the concept of a battalion, or squadron, coin is well known. The logo of the unit, or a symbol of import to that unit, is stamped on this piece of thick metal. One of my favorites, which I actually got while doing a chaplaincy exchange with an Air Force unit, has a cat who looks like Felix featured on it. Also familiar to most veterans is the financial penalty resultant of being apprehended in certain places without one’s unit coin. There is no f...

  • Chocolate addiction hard to stop

“Where did you hide them,” whined my wife as she opened cabinets after supper on a recent evening. I didn’t have to ask what she was looking for, I knew she was after the Whoppers the Original Malted Milk Balls. If I played my cards right I knew she would do anything for the candy. No, I didn’t hide them just because it was Easter, I’ve been hiding them for years. I’ve learned that if I don’t hide them I might not get any myself. I got tired of coming across empty Malted Milk Ball cartons so I decided to do something abo... Full story

  • Loved ones more important than catching quakes

“Oh wow, the whole house is rocking, Dad.” I was on the phone with daughter, Robyn. She lives out west in the Mojave Desert. Her house was moving, the grandkids were yelling. “It’s an earthquake,” I said. Robyn lives in California. So if the house is shaking then it must be an earthquake. “I’ll call you back,” she said and she was gone. I pondered whether she and the kids would be all right. I pondered earthquakes. We don’t get too many of those around eastern New Mexico, but I have to tell you, I’ve always wanted to se... Full story
