  • Their view: Governor needs to bolster border protection

Brian Moore of Clayton is one of eight candidates for New Mexico lieutenant governor. Here’s what he had to say recently on his Web site about violence along the Mexican border: “The murder of an Arizona rancher with ties to New Mexico is more evidence of the violence spilling over our southern border with Mexico. “Over the past seven months, as we’ve traveled all over New Mexico, we’ve heard stories of animals missing and families threatened. We heard the story of a couple tied up and robbed, and now Rob Krenz’s name is add... Full story

  • Ralph Nader owes explanation

    Tibor Machan

So we have it on the good authority of The London Times that all is well with the Obama Administration’s latest interference with the market place. Here is how The Times reported on this long-desired development, admittedly desired by but fraction of those concerned: “In a coup that achieves something President Clinton promised but never delivered, President Obama has forced the big three U.S. carmakers, and their unions, to accept tough mileage rules for cars and SUVs. The rules will cut emissions from vehicles by more tha... Full story

  • Vatican should have followed Jesus' example

This viewpoint, which reflects those of Freedom Communications, was written by the editorial staff at the Gazette in Colorado Springs, Colo. The best public relations campaigns are based in selfless compassion, truth and transparency. As a human organization with more than 1 billion members, the Catholic Church has an abundance of internal scandals in need of good PR. Pedophiles and pederasts have joined the priesthood and abused children, just as predators have become teachers, doctors and cops in order to harm those weaker...

  • New urgency to immigration reform policy

Reports of deadly violence just across the Mexican border — in Matamoros, Mier, Reynosa and other cities — are starting to appear daily on the pages of the Brownsville (Texas) Herald. On bad days gunfire can be heard north of the border; stray bullets from one firefight even landed on the campus of the University of Texas at Brownsville last year. What began as isolated fights between drug gangs, or between them and the Mexican military, is spilling over into Texas neighborhoods, schools and shopping centers....

  • NMAW undermined joint group

Clovis’ water supply is not in danger of running dry next month or even next year. Telling the truth, the whole truth, is a fundamental principle of how we conduct ourselves, whether in our personal lives or our businesses. It’s what allows us to look at ourselves in the mirror, to look at our friends and neighbors straight away and to sleep well at night. The results are never good when that principle is violated. We’re all witness to that right now as we watch months of productive work by the Clovis Water Users Worki...

  • Old fashions just seem silly now

Past a certain age, I’ve learned, you no longer “step” into the saddle…you “climb” on, thankful your horse is well-trained and doesn’t try to take off before you’re mounted. I’ve learned some other things, too. That hat with the 5-inch brim that was sooo cute and (maybe) sexy when I was 17 looks like I stepped underneath a dried-up creosote bush now. When I was young my friends and I soaked our new felt hats in the bathtub and then fixed the creases just right. The crown was flattened so low we could barely fit our...

  • Director says EPCOG will follow state open meetings laws

    Sharna Johnson

Eastern Plains Council of Governments Interim Director Richard Arguello said Thursday the organization’s failure to notify the public of an executive committee meeting was an oversight that won’t happen again. “I’m going to say that it’s my fault on this,” Arguello said. “We had a little faux pas there ... it was a miscommunication (and) I assure you that’s not going to happen again.” The board met Wednesday in special session and adjourned into a near two-hour executiv...

  • My turn: Don't be afraid to settle for what's on earth

I’ve heard many keynoters tell their audience not to “settle.” It’s inspiring — but could inspire dissatisfaction. Shooting for the stars is great if you own a spacecraft, but most of us live with more pedestrian transport. The nearest star, Proxima Centauri, is 270,000 times farther than the 93 million miles to the sun. Allegorically, during our transient journey, most of us could never come close without frying or dying of old age. Maybe it is enough for the luckier among our seven billion — hurtling at 66,000 m...

  • Mustache might be worth trading

As medical progress marches on, the use of transplants and body parts has become commonplace. Worldwide, from India to Italy, from Iran to Indiana, the surgeries are routine. According to the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. alone has 83,000 people on the waiting list for a kidney. Corneas, hearts, livers and lungs do a brisk trade on the organ market. I’m assuming that many athletes, models, yodelers, magicians and pickpockets insure their precious body parts against damage or loss — fingers, figures, vocal cords, or k... Full story

  • Your happiness depends on you

    Joan Clayton

Today is a gift from God. How you use this day is up to you. We all have the same amount of time, and we can have a good day or a bad one. You make the choice for the kind of day you have, and you can make it happen. I want today to be like Psalm 118:24: “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Every day is another opportunity to be happy. Squeeze it and love it. Please don’t waste it. Let’s not live in the past. Living yesterday brings up past mistakes and regrets. Worry takes on the sor...

    PNT Staff

Eastern New Mexico University is hosting a Holocaust Remembrance Day on Monday. ENMU Assistant Professor of History Dale Streeter said six million Jews and others Nazis considered impure died in the Holocaust. “This year we’re going to have a vigil and a commemorative table where some of the students are going to read some of the diaries and some accounts of these things,” Streeter said. The universal symbol of the Holocaust is a ring of barb wire with a candle burning in the center to remember those who died. Remem...

  • God's rules more important than man's

    Curtis Shelburne

Not long ago my wife and I were away for a couple of days at a hotel in the Dallas area for a training seminar. For almost 20 years, I was the one attending the classes and she was the spouse along for the ride. For a number of years now, the shoe has been on the other foot. I’m not a rocket scientist, so it may have taken me 10 minutes to figure out that the job description of “the spouse” on such trips is by far the better part, even if, as is usually the case, the spous...
