The school has begun looking into prospects for building an on-campus, multipurpose facility which would serve for home events in football, soccer and track. The stadium would be on University Avenue, next to the Greyhounds' current football practice facility. There are lots of ways to express yourself in visual terms even if you don't think you can draw or paint. The first time I thought of this was when I read an article in one of the Santa Fe free art magazines on art journaling. The article was actually about a woman who had passed away, and related the fact that her daughter now had inherited a large stack of art journals which the woman had kept for some 60 years, dating back to when she was in high school. The work included drawings, writings, snatches of poetry and prose,...

Kenneth Broad switched tracks on the new-fangled music device and the speakers in the old Norman Petty Studio came to life with a mellow sound. Even more mellow was the brief background vocal added by David Bigham to the Buddy Holly hit. It was a special tour of the studio with the New Mexico Secretary of Tourism in attendance but the fact that she was along wasn't the special part. We were there with folks who knew the history of the place and the music really well. I've known Broad all my life and grew up around the block...

BLACKWATER DRAW — You can practice the option, the home-run throw up the middle or the quick-out to the sideline all spring. But strap on all the gear, and it usually comes down to turnovers. Those opposing equal rights for others inevitably find themselves on the wrong side of history. No one is more heterosexually macho than me, but I can think of no legitimate reason to deny gays the same rights I take for granted. A local letter-writer recently criticized politicians who opposed gay marriage, then changed their minds. I respect people who become enlightened and change their positions. The author lamented that acceptance of same-sex marriage is growing, and wondered what was changing. Could it be society? The... Full story

Eastern New Mexico University freshman Jacqueline Candelaria was down to the last chance to extend her modest hitting streak to five games. More important, she was trying to break up Tarleton State pitcher Randi Fentress' no-hitter. Fentress (12-10) got all three decisions in th series for the TexAnns (21-15, 9-6 LSC), including a loss i... Full story

I can always count on my friends to add a new page to my scrapbook entitled "How to Mess up a Simple Calving." This chapter would be entitled "Halter Safety." Rob was deep into calving his heifers. His calving lot was football field size including a small shed and a couple jugs. It was decorated with swells and depressions common to the coulee ranchland in eastern Washington. For his regular heifer checks he used a typical "rancher's" 4-Wheeler that he'd bought from an orchard man who had traded up in a good year. Ron paid... Full story
