    No child is getting left behind in Portales schools, when it comes to reading on the kindergarten through third grade level, anyway. Portales schools were recently ranked first in the state in the Reading First program.   • Amateur dinosaur hunter strikes it rich

    North of Clovis, in the Tucumcari Basin, dinosaurs roamed a tropical swamp 225 million years ago. Teresa Allsup, an amateur paleontologist from Clovis, collects the skeletons left behind. On a recent dig, Allsup’s passion for hunting for dinosaur fossils emerged in a series of “awesomes” and “wows” as she discovered pieces. One of those was a leg bone, likely of a phytosaur.   • Fort Sumner man arrested on sex charges

    A 23-year-old Fort Sumner gas station employee is accused of having sexual relations with several underage girls over the last year, according to a New Mexico State Police press release. Phillip Delgadillo is charged with 13 counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor, attempted sexual penetration of a minor, enticement of a child, kidnapping/abduction, intimidation of a witness and other related offenses, the release said.   • Library to receive cancer reference materials

    In collaboration with the American Library Association, the Lance Armstrong Foundation will provide librarians across the country with reference materials on health-related information, specifically cancer. The foundation is sending LIVESTRONG Survivorship Notebooks to more than 14,200 libraries, including the Clovis-Carver Public Library.
