  • Politics have no place in education

    Tibor Machan

The New York Times reports that according to a ruling by a federal judge “a Mississippi school board was grossly discriminatory and mean-spirited when it told Constance McMillen that she could not attend her high school prom with her girlfriend.” According to the court, “Ms. McMillen’s constitutional rights had been violated.” Ms. McMillen, who is a senior at Itawamba Agriculture High School, is and has for many years been a lesbian and government schools are not permitted to discriminate against lesbians. Never mind the...

  • Their view: Reform allows too much government control

Penny Bailey is president of the High Plains Patriots, a political organization whose Web site trumpets limited government and individual rights. Here’s what she has to say in response to U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Lujan Jr., D-N.M., and others who support the health care bill: “I fought and will continue to fight against this bill and any move to take America from the Land of Opportunity to the Land of the Dependent. “First, if a piece of legislation is good for all of America, then backdoor deals and arm twisting would not be necess... Full story

  • Being sick a favor to husband

Some people suffer from motion sickness. I’m one of them. Horseback is about the only movement my body can tolerate without nausea. I’ve thrown up in airplanes, cars, trucks, buses, boats — even in water when the only flotation device was my body. I’ve read that about half our nation’s astronauts have this affliction, so at least I have company. My fellow sufferers know this sickness is about the “sickest” feeling a human can have. We usually get zero sympathy, too. My family deals with it by pretending they don’t... Full story

  • Letter to the editor: Obamacare exerts too much control

Obamacare exerts too much control I must respond to the Portales woman who thanked U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Lujan Jr., D-N.M., for voting for Obamacare. I fought and will continue to fight against this bill and any move to take America from the Land of Opportunity to the Land of the Dependent. First, if a piece of legislation is good for all of America, then backdoor deals and arm twisting would not be necessary. It is appalling the amount of dirty politics that went into getting this bill passed when the majority of Americans were... Full story

  • Prepare to pay higher costs for health care

Freedom New Mexico Proponents of the recently passed health care bill often stated that the United States should have universal health care “like Canada,” “like Europe,” “like other advanced nations.” Opponents were quick to point out that like all those other nations, nationalized health care in this country would lead to long waits and worse care. Within two weeks of the bill’s passage, developments already are pointing to the apparent truth to those warnings. The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons has... Full story

    CNJ staff

A 43-year-old Clovis man was sentenced to 18 years in prison Thursday for trafficking cocaine. James Sneed was convicted by a jury in October. He was arrested while drug task force agents were serving a search warrant at his home in March 2009. During the search, Sneed was attempting to get dressed and agents saw a large bag of cocaine fall out of underwear he was holding, according to a press release from the district attorneys office. Agents also found a second bag of cocaine, a bag of marijuana and more than $1,600 cash... Full story

  • Pet licensing ordinance vote split

  • Resurrection reconciles joy and sorrow

More than a few writers have talked about the place where Joy and Sorrow meet. In a moment of deep contentment, someone may say, “I’m so happy I could cry!” And in the moments of deepest and most unutterable joy, we say nothing at all. We don’t live long before we learn that tears are more precious than diamonds, and the best tears are tears of joy. When those joy-tears come, we usually don’t analyze them; we live the moment. But if the time comes to talk about such moments, author J. R. R. Tolkien, most famous for his amazi...

  • Easter story about ultimate sacrifice

    Judy Brandon

This Sunday is very significant for Christians. Some call it the Easter season. Anyone can tell it is Easter by just visiting the Easter aisle at the grocery store. For some, Easter is about new clothes, a visit to church and Easter egg hunts. Yet, the message of the resurrection is about sacrifice and hope. That is right — one Christ’s sacrifice and then as a result, the hope and assurance for Christians of eternal life. We throw around the words sacrifice and sometimes... Full story
