  • Clovis leaves home

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Apr 3, 2019

CLOVIS - By the time Clovis' baseball team plays at Bell Park again, your tax returns will either be filed or late. When hosting Lovington this past Tuesday, the Wildcats played their last home game until Apr. 16. And they left on a good note, routing the visitors 9-2. That made it four victories in a row for the 'Cats, another good night for a team that hadn't had many early on. There had been plenty of games falling into the if-it-was-an-injured-horse-the...

BERKELEY, Calif. — Former Greyhound basketball player Mark Fox is making a return to the Division I sidelines. Fox, who was with ENMU during the 1989-90 and 1990-91 seasons, was named the new head coach at California, the school announced Friday. “Early in my coaching career, I had the privilege to spend time with coach Pete Newell. It will be my honor to lead the Bears on the court gracing his name,” Fox said in a statement. “The lineage of greatness of the Pac-12 offers a tremendous platform for Cal basketball.” Fox was f...

  • Portales inched out

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 30, 2019

PORTALES - Be aggressive on offense, and tip your cap if the defense makes the play to get you out. That's the mantra for most high school baseball programs. That was the Portales Ram program on Friday night. Problem was, Taos made the plays and did just enough to steal an extra-inning 8-7 win from the Rams to close out Friday night's session of the Ram Invitational. Portales (4-4) was scheduled to finish up the tournament with games Saturday against Ruidoso and St....

  • Texico wins first two of Colt Classic

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 30, 2019

ROSWELL — Coaches will often say pitching wins games and titles. The first was certainly true for Texico in its first two games of this weekend’s Colt Classic at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell. Dalton Thatcher fired a no-hitter in Friday’s 6-0 win over Shiprock, coming an early team error from a perfect game, with an outing fueled by nine strikeouts and no walks. A day earlier, Luke Phipps tossed a two-hitter, including 11 strikeouts and no walks. The only run to score against Phipps was unearned. Two games, two w...

Things had been going so well for the Greyhounds, who tore off six straight victories before the l...

  • ENMU falls in opener

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 30, 2019

ODESSA, Texas — Yes, there will be other days, other Lone Star Conference games for Eastern New Mexico’s baseball team. Friday was certainly one the Greyhounds would like to forget, perhaps by the game film meeting head-on with a match. By allowing UT-Permian Basin runs in every inning except the sixth — including four in the first, five in the second and eight in the third — Eastern was on the business end of a 22-5 oucher in Friday’s LSC opener for both teams. Permian Basin clouted 15 hits and feasted on four Greyhound...

  • Spring season ends

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Mar 30, 2019

PORTALES - With Silver scoring to make it a one-possession game with just three minutes left to play, fans watching the conclusion of Eastern New Mexico's annual Green-Silver spring game wondered - would a game without live kickoffs create an onside kick situation for Silver, or would Green simply get handed the ball and a chance to run out the clock? Answer, neither. After Paul Terry's 15-yard touchdown run, the Greyhound football program borrowed a page from the American...

  • Portales to consider bolstering police

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 30, 2019

PORTALES — The Portales City Council on Tuesday will consider an effort aimed at bringing veteran police officers to the community. The council will vote on an incentive program, which City Manager Sammy Standefer said would pay New Mexico certified police officers between $5,000 and $10,000, based on their experience. “We’re spending a tremendous amount of money sending new rookie officers through police academy and so this recruitment incentive is actually a cash signing incentive for veteran certified police offic...
