We’re one-quarter done with 2016, and the second quarter starts with April 1, also known as April Fools’ Day. The pranking day has been popular since 1700, though its exact origins are questioned. • Brown: Best cows are good mamas

On the animal intelligence spectrum, cattle fall somewhere above deer and somewhere below horses. Within this range of intelligence, the individual cow can vary from dumb enough to get stuck in a fence to smart enough to always be going the wrong direction when it’s time to gather the herd. In my experience, smarter cows are a little more ornery, harder to catch, but are bottom-line a better investment. Audra Brown Down on the Farm What are the properties of a profitable cow?... Full story

  • Dobson: Wishing your garden new life, memories

This past week, I saw my first robin. What else — besides the face-blasting winds — marks the arrival of spring? Like other garden-philes, I began my mental planting shortly after the new year. I had visions of a faerie garden tucked into a corner of the yard, a new mosaic bird bath, and a tiled raised veggie bed, just a few of a hundred things I’d like to do at Head Acres this year. Patti Dobson And then, regret hit. I realized that, like so many spring seasons before this, I...

  • Rodriguez: Remembering Mother Angelica

    Helena Rodriguez

These are the words of Mother Angelica, as she was known by millions of people across the globe, the trademark personality of EWTN, the largest religious media organization on the planet according to Raymond Arroyo, news director for EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network). I was heart-struck when I heard Mother Angelica, 92, d... Full story

  • McManigal: Liberty much like buffet choices

Buffets are nice. You get to choose what you like from all the glorious possibilities offered, picking and choosing your favorites. If you see something you find disgusting, skip it and move on to the next item. Kent McManigal No single buffet can possibly offer everything, but no one can tell the buffets what to offer. Consider them all together and your dining choices are practically unlimited. Some people think of liberty as a buffet, but they want to be in control of...

  • Render: Automation already taking over

I graduated from high school when I was 17 years old and started work at the then-minimum wage of $1.25 an hour. The furnished room I rented cost $8 a week and the bathroom was down the hall. Rube Render In the 21st century, where all things can be fixed by government fiat, California has moved to pass legislation raising the minimum wage to $10.50 an hour next year, and then gradually raising it to $15 an hour. Santa Fe never saw a California labor law it couldn’t love. Fifte...
