  • Their view: Chick, duckling gifts pose health risk

The New Mexico Department of Health and the New Mexico Livestock Board issued a press release Thursday advising families to avoid potential exposure to salmonella by not giving baby chicks and ducklings to children as Easter gifts: In the last six years, New Mexico has had 16 Salmonella cases related to baby chicks. Many of the cases were in young children. The Department also discourages families from buying small turtles (less than 4 inches) sold at flea markets and roadside stands because they are also known to carry...

  • Supreme Court hearings should be broadcast

Even by U.S. Supreme Court standards, this week's hearings on President Obama's health reform act are a historical milestone. It's arguably the biggest case the court has addressed in decades. Sadly — and despite passionate, polarized national interest — only about 300 people each day witnessed these hearings live. With due respect to news reports, that's a tragedy. These hearings should have been televised live. They deal with landmark legislation and how it fits — or doesn't — with America's Constitution. No matter how the...

  • State creates made-up problems

It amuses me how many problems that have a government-mandated "solution" are caused by previous government mandates that came about as misguided solutions for previously manufactured problems. And, because the majority of "The People" have become convinced that the earlier mandates are "The Way it's Always Been Done" (rather than a relatively recent "gum, tape, and string" contraption), they believe there is no rational, voluntary way to solve the problems they see around them now. After all, you can't alter one element... Full story

  • Sweet home New Mexico: Extend common courtesy

I watched an interesting exchange happen as I was driving my car on Prince Street. I was in the left lane, and there was a car in front of me, as well as a car to the right of me with several cars behind it. The car in front of me was trying to merge into the right lane. It had its blinker on, and was inching toward the lane, hoping some kind soul would let it in. Six or seven cars passed the waiting car by, almost determined that he was not going to get in front of them and slow them down. Needing to make an upcoming right...

  • Religion column: Jesus' arrival cause for parade

    Judy Brandon

From the time I was little I can remember watching parades at one time or another. My far back memories take me to Missouri when we would always go to parades in downtown Kansas City. It just takes an occasion to throw a parade. Each time I waited on the sidewalk for the upcoming parade, I could hardly wait for all the excitement that was marching down the street toward me. There would be bands, cowboys, clowns on scooters, clowns juggling and clowns walking on stilts. There...

  • amos the churchmouse: the palm branch mystery

    Gary Mitchell

Editor's note: Amos is a churchmouse who types by hurling himself at the keys, but he can't use the capital shift keys and he shuns punctuation marks – except the hyphens and dashes. the palm branch mystery boss willifred the white rat invited me to jump in his tiny time traveler again this week to visit the site of the original palm Sunday celebration so we attached the tiny time traveler to my 57 cheese-rolet hopped in spun around twice and found ourselves on the outskirts of first-century jerusalem on the way to bethany e...
