  • Libertarianism can and does work

    Kent McManigal|Updated Oct 18, 2017

From time to time someone will tell me they really like the idea of libertarianism; they only wish it could work in the real world. This reminds me of someone confessing they like the idea of electricity, if only it could actually work. Because not only can it work, it does. Libertarianism doesn’t just work; you are surrounded by it all the time. In fact, you practice libertarianism yourself, even if you never realized it. And so does everyone else — other than the...

  • Democrat smugness lost election

    Rube Render|Updated Oct 18, 2017

The 2016 presidential election showcased both major political parties with an unyielding narrative. This is the first of a two-part series that attempts to connect some political dots to arrive at how and why we are in our current state of affairs. First, the Democrat story. There was no way Hillary could lose to Trump in a head-to-head campaign. When Bill Clinton established the Clinton Foundation and all its ancillary organizations as charities he did so with the intention...

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 18, 2017

CLOVIS — Well into autumn and district playoff time fast approaching, Clovis' volleyball team needed something, anything, to break out of its recent funk. A five-game losing streak — four setbacks against District 2-6A opponents and one to area rival Portales — had changed the complexion of the Lady Wildcats' season, which had begun with a flourish at 8-2. They needed to change it back, return to a positive mode, and fast. Enter Manzano, Clovis' opponent in Tuesday...

  • Prep soccer: Sandia beats both Clovis teams 3-0

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 18, 2017

CLOVIS — After a pair of 3-0 losses to Sandia on Tuesday, both Clovis soccer teams are looking at two sets of odds for making the Class 6A playoffs. Those odds, unfortunately, are slim and none. Both Clovis girls coach Traci Sievers and boys coach Greg Trujillo figure the only way their teams can make the playoffs is to take a win Saturday against La Cueva. But they admit that may not be enough. The girls visit La Cueva at 1 p.m., while the boys host the Bears at 3 p.m. At L...

  • Texico example worth following for state schools

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Oct 17, 2017

Activists, local education bureaucrats and teacher unions have been fully on board with the mantra that we just don’t spend enough taxpayer dollars on K-12 education in New Mexico. This is in spite of that fact that when it comes to per-student spending, New Mexico tends to be closer to the middle of the pack — in stark comparison to our achievement rankings and graduation rates that are consistently closer to bottom of the barrel. And it goes far beyond debate. Unable to convince legislators to increase our $2.7 billion...
