Portales High’s Danielle Vasquez offered a pretty basic explanation on Monday of the Lady Rams’ recent success. “We have good players on this team,” the sophomore left fielder said. “Defensively we’re pretty good, and our hitting is coming along.” After sustaining a 10-2 loss at the hands of defending Class 1-2A state champion Jal on Thursday in the opening round of Dexter’s Lindsey Callaway tournament, PHS bounced back with 8-0 and 11-0 shutouts of Ruidoso and Eunice, respectively, to claim fifth place in... A Navy E-2C “Hawkeye” gets clearance to taxi Monday at Cannon Air Force Base. The plane serves as an airborne radar unit for jet fighters. (CNJ staff photo: Eric Kluth) The skies over eastern New Mexico are carrying more than the rumbling F-16s this month. Through a joint exercise called Roving Sands, several Navy E-2C Hawkeyes and numerous F-18s are also taking flight across the area. The exercise is part of a much larger operation called Joint Red Flag in which planes from several branches of the U.S. military and the B...
Now that the legislative session is over, lobbyists and business owners alike are tracking which bills the governor will sign into law and which ones he will veto. For businesses and industry associations, a mixture of tax holidays, incentives and cuts makes the news from the legislature seem pretty cheery. “We consider it a very positive session for the state’s business community,” said John Carey, president and chief executive officer of the Association of Commerce and Industry of New Mexico, which lobbies on behalf...

Politicians, whether at the state or federal level, seldom pass up a chance to grandstand. So, just like their counterparts in Washington, D.C., made political hay by badgering baseball, Texas lawmakers seem intent on wasting time and effort on meaningless diversions outside the scope of their office instead of concentrating on the serious issues facing their constituents. One ludicrous example comes from Houston, where state Rep. Al Edwards seems fixated on high school cheerleaders and the manner in which they perform. So...
Rain in Seattle is not news; the news is when rain fails to fall, as it has been doing lately. Likewise, what is conspicuous about the aftermath of the school shootings in Red Lake, Minn., last week was what didn’t occur — a torrent of calls for new gun-control legislation. The attack was the worst at a school since Columbine six years ago. It came on the heels of some other publicized eruptions of gun violence — including a rampage by a defendant at an Atlanta courthouse and a mass shooting at a worship service in a...
While Harvard’s President Larry Summers turns slowly on a spit over a faculty campfire for engaging in thoughtcrime, another Ivy League leader is dipping his toe into controversial waters. Columbia President Lee Bollinger, speaking at a New York Bar Association meeting, declared that university professors have responsibilities in addition to rights. The New York Times reported that Bollinger cautioned: “We should not elevate our autonomy as individual faculty members above every other value. ... (Professors have an...
