  • The hunts begin

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Mar 25, 2018

With spring upon us, Portales and Clovis are readying for thousands of Easter eggs, hundreds of children, and a popular bunny. That’s right, Easter egg hunt season has arrived, and both communities have prepared events for Saturday. The fun begins at 9 a.m. at the Guy Leeder Softball Complex in Clovis, where 9,000 Easter eggs are ripe for the picking, according to Clovis Assistant City Clerk Vicki Reyes. She said the city decided on 9,000 instead of the usual 4,000 due to demand. “We just have really, really large crowds of...

  • Going to show with friends was fun

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Mar 25, 2018

The Ambassadors in Portales have been onto a good thing for several years now — movie nights for kids. Not long after the audio/visual equipment was installed in the historic Yam Theatre the group put together a program to get the movie licensing paid for by a combination of sponsorship and profits from a concession stand with really generous prices. When the free movies started in Portales youngsters had been without movies in Portales for nearly 10 years. Ambassadors f...

  • Burke ties school homer record as Hounds sweep Falcons

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 24, 2018

ODESSA, Texas — Senior Erikka Burke hit a go-ahead solo homer to tie the Eastern New Mexico University career record, and followed it up with the first four-hit game of her career to help the Greyhounds take the series over Texas Permian Basin Saturday, 3-2 and 5-0. Jennifer McElroy went 3-for-6, all extra-base hits for Eastern (15-19, 8-10 Lone Star Conference), which rebounded after Friday's 9-1 opening loss that represented the Falcons' first LSC win of the year. After t...

  • Rams drop Saturday pair at Invite

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 24, 2018

PORTALES — Zeke Dominguez was a jokester in the dugout, and an ace on the mound. The Cobre sophomore fought off a few early jams, and allowed just three runs on the afternoon to give his teammates a chance for a narrow win. The Indians took it, scoring three runs in the final six innings for a 3-0 win over Portales Saturday in the Portales Invite. Dominguez largely kept the Rams at bay, with five strikeouts to offset six walks and the hits. "He did a good job against us," Ram...

  • Portales teams cruise at Northern New Mexico Invite

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 24, 2018

SANTA FE — The way the Portales High tennis teams played this weekend in Santa Fe, it's almost a shame they have to leave. All things considered, the Ram teams will enter Monday's home meet with Clovis on a good note as the boys team won the Northern New Mexico Invite while the girls placed second in the eight-team fields. The boys lost just one of their 16 matches against Espanola Valley, Capital, Palo Duro and St. Michael's, with two singles matches and two doubles m...

  • Reporter's notebook - March 25

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Mar 24, 2018

Can you spell ‘mozambique?’ After a 15-round competition in Albuquerque on Saturday, Akansha Nanda, a sixth-grader from Santa Fe, won the 2018 New Mexico Spelling Bee. Local students Jaxon Bender, 10, and Jorge Barraza, 14, of Clovis, Timothy Roybal, 10, of Fort Sumner, Saisravya Bandla, 14, of San Jon and Brock Fowler, 13, of Floyd were among the 46 spellers who took part in the competition. Akansha earned the victory by correctly spelling “mozambique,” a lightweight dress fabric in small fancy patterns that is loosely...

  • Locals protest gun violence

CLOVIS — They walked from Hilltop Plaza to the Curry County Courthouse on Saturday, holding signs calling for an end to gun violence. The "March for Our Lives" event attracted about five dozen people. It was one of hundreds of demonstrations that took place across the country on Saturday, supporting a similar gathering held in Washington, D.C., organized by survivors of the Feb. 14 school shooting at Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Standing just across the s...

  • Hounds home at last

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Mar 24, 2018

PORTALES — For the first time since the school reinstated track and field in 2006, Eastern New Mexico University athletes competed in a meet they could call their own. School officials called it a good start, with many more ENMU Open meets to come. Until about 100 athletes descended upon Greyhound Stadium Saturday morning, the Division II school hadn't hosted a track meet in roughly 40 years, during the school's previous track and field era where it won NAIA national titles i... Full story

  • Toy-gun incident should have been relayed to public

    Updated Mar 24, 2018

Clovis, like most places, is full of gossip and social media prophets of doom who exaggerate and make stuff up, especially as it relates to dangers in the community. The only thing worse is when public officials enable those fearmongers by withholding information that really is relevant to public safety. Police Chief Doug Ford and School Superintendent Jody Balch may well have had good intentions when they kept quiet about a Feb. 8 Airsoft pistol incident at Marshall Middle School. But failing to alert the community,... Full story

  • Cats win 'Sal' with walkoff hit in ninth

The Staff of the News|Updated Mar 24, 2018

RIO RANCHO — Wins are always cool. Walk-off wins to capture a tournament title are way cooler. Clovis’ baseball team had a way cool win on Saturday, beating Cleveland 3-2 on junior Garrett Langrell’s RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth to capture the Sal Puentes Tournament championship in Rio Rancho. “It’s a huge win for us,” Clovis coach Richard Cruce said. “We needed to get even with Cleveland for seeding purposes.” Cruce’s team won the Sal Puentes crown and improved to 12-3 in the process by squeaking out Saturday’s ga... Full story

  • Clovis tennis teams split at Manzano

The Staff of the News|Updated Mar 24, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE — Clovis’ boys tennis team rolled on Saturday, while the Clovis girls showed steady improvement, when each squad battled Manzano, completing a two-match district swing through Albuquerque. A day after playing Sandia, both Wildcat teams visited the neighboring Monarchs for the second District 2-6A match for each. The Clovis boys won 7-2, while the girls lost 8-1 but had some hard-fought matches and a victory by Brittney Albin at No. 6 singles. In boys singles, Clovis’ David Heath had a tough draw at No. 1 again...

  • Tough day in Texas for Eastern baseball

The Staff of the News|Updated Mar 24, 2018

CANYON, Texas — An eight-run inning is usually hard to overcome for any team on the business end of it, and that was certainly the case for Eastern New Mexico’s baseball team on Saturday, when the Hounds surrendered eight in the bottom of the second and wound up losing the first game of a doubleheader 13-1 on the road against Lone Star Conference foe West Texas A&M. A&M plated a run in the bottom of the first before exploding for the eight-spot in the second, putting Eastern in an early 9-0 hole. The Greyhounds’ lone run c...

  • New fur decidedly out of fashion

    Dnieka Hartsfield, NiekaStyle|Updated Mar 24, 2018

The latest fashion news is all about animal welfare. Unless you shop vintage fur, it's going to get increasingly difficult to purchase fur pieces in the coming years. Recently, Donatella Versace announced that her brand will no longer carry fur. In an interview with 1843 magazine she said, "I don't want to kill animals to make fashion." This comes at an interesting time considering fur pieces are some of the biggest trends lately. You will see fur coats, handbags, wallets,... Full story

  • Our People: Master rises from rough start

    Updated Mar 24, 2018

Constance Williams was born in Pampa, Texas, the youngest of three. The family moved from town to town, creating difficulties in her young life. She spent a short time in a women's shelter with her mother before picking up to move to Dallas where her mother remarried. In 2000, she graduated from South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas. She said it was in Dallas where she began to shape her world view and the culture shock of the inner city taught her the differences of others'...

  • Letters to the editor - March 25

    Updated Mar 24, 2018

Editor’s note: The following letters were submitted by students at House High School as part of a class project. Gun owners should meet standards The Second Amendment of the US Constitution reads, “A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Some states, such as California, require background checks for all firearm sales, including those between private individuals. This was stated by the California Gun Law. Now in my opini...

  • $10 sunscreen worth every penny

    Kevin Wilson, Managing editor|Updated Mar 24, 2018

On my Friday night grocery run, I came across the aisle that only means stress to me every year. There are two reasons why any sunscreen is worth $10. The first is the store knows it’s got you. You’re already in the store, which is a clear sign it’s not worth it for you to go home to get the $10 bottle you forgot. The second reason is more simple: Because it’s worth it. The latter applies to me, probably to a degree greater than anybody you know. My skin has never handled the sun well; any years of living in the sun of the...

  • Pooling reflections of years past

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Mar 24, 2018

This concludes my three-part series of looking back at eight years of columns. Today I focus on reflections and meditations I’ve written. • “Every time I feel the wind coming down and see the stars stretching up toward where life began, I know Dallan Sanders is speeding through the universe on the wings of the next dimension.” • “Like a rooster crowing, the sound of my blind neighbor’s mower awakened enough guilt in us to redeem our own machines from winter sleep for tha...
