  • My life a testament to my dad

link Patti Dobson Religion columnist So what do you get the guy who has everything? More important, what do you get for a guy who’s given you everything? My dad, Tom Dobson, turned 77 on Sunday. That’s a big number. Especially big when, back in 1994, my family was hanging out in the Intensive Care Unit because he’d had a heart attack. That event set in motion a roller coaster of health issues. Since then, every birthday — every day — has been a gift. I’ve learned a lot from...

  • Critter's always a critter, but sometimes a varmint

link Audra Brown Local columnist Last week, we discussed the definition of varmint. This time, I’d like to talk about critters. Now critters are not, by definition, excluded from being varmints from time to time, but they’re generally not full-time varmints, or might never really be quite as bad as a varmint. Also, a lot of critters make good eating. Of course, despite a general lack of extreme damage causing, neither are critters particularly beneficial. They can be big pro...

  • Communication should be first option in dispute

One point that was mentioned but deserves more attention in discussions of the recent Ferguson, Mo., police-citizen clashes is the use of tear gas on civilians. As many people realize, the use of tear gas is banned in wartime use as result of the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1933. Yet nations across the globe use it on their own citizens as a method of control. That’s right, the gas first used by the French against the Germans in World War I is a common agent to break up protests, riots and mobs. If something is too horrifi...

  • Five things to know about liberty

link Kent McManigal Local columnist I see newspaper articles regularly offering five things to know about a person, an object, or a job that might interest readers. Apparently nothing is as poorly understood as liberty — which is strange in a country supposedly founded to give regular people the best shot at achieving liberty. Perhaps it is time for five things to know about liberty: • Defending rights: Just because you admit someone has a right to do something, it doe... Full story

  • Indecisiveness won't build coalition

link Rube Render Local columnist John Kerry’s opinion piece in the Aug. 29 New York Times states, “With a united response led by the United States and the broadest possible coalition of nations, the cancer of ISIS will not be allowed to spread to other countries.” Secretary of State Kerry goes on: “Next week, on the sidelines of the NATO summit meeting in Wales, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and I will meet with our counterparts from our European allies. The goal is to e...

link Judy Brandon Columnist Local columnist I was in the barn last Saturday going through some old “treasures” that we have stashed away in boxes. That is when I happened upon some containers protecting relics of our family's past. It is amazing how soon we forget when things are packed away in long forgotten boxes. Then when we stumble upon them, our hearts are warmed by the memories. First, I opened one box and found John Scott’s cherished baseball card collection. Those...
