    Benna Sayyed CMI staff writer

Kevin Spears revisited the Floyd Lions Club Country Jamboree for the first time in more than 10 years Saturday night to watch his son Hayden perform songs by country music stars. "I'm always surprised at how much local talent we have," said Spears, 36, office administrator at the Ninth Judicial District Attorney's office in Clovis. "It's a good opportunity to showcase the younger talent. I think the jamboree is still going strong. It's kind of a hidden gem to the area." The... Full story

  • Importance always around corner

    Wendel Sloan Local columnist

Time has been a stern disciplinarian in teaching me that I'm not special or unique — except in the way that everyone is. It's been a shock to learn that my profound thoughts and experiences mean little to others. My life is filled with minutiae: sleeping, eating, showering, dressing, shopping, reading, chit-chatting, exercising… Like everyone, I engage in non-stop internal conversations about the important things I should be doing that drown out my actual activities and conversations. The important things are always just aro...

Another 60 days in the Roundhouse, another set of hits and misses for New Mexicans. In addition to the important tax reform compromise package that awaits action by Gov. Susana Martinez, many other important issues were acted on — or not — in the past two short months. The good news first. Lawmakers: - Brought public employee, educator and judicial pensions closer to solvency with a mix across the plans that for various employees trims benefits, increases contributions, tightens retirement eligibility and cost-of-living inc...

  • Their view: Women leading state's charge for liberty

PAUL GESSING is president of New Mexico's Rio Grande Foundation, which promotes limited government, economic freedom and individual responsibility. He finds it noteworthy "that it is women who are leading the charge for liberty here in New Mexico." Here's a snippet from a recent posting on the RGF website: It has been well-documented that we have the nation's first Latina Governor, a conservative, but even in the Legislature, women are showing a strong resolve to vote for freedom. I logged on to our "Freedom Index" vote...

  • Pegasus flies again

It was a peaceful Utah winter morning. Levi stood next to his bedroom window and pulled back the shade. He squinted as his eyes took in the brilliance of a new day. Fresh snow lay like a blanket over the corrals, the meadows and the mountains beyond. Puffy little cotton ball clouds clung to the peaks like chimney smoke. The sky-blue background made it look like God had decorated Heaven's wall with ceramic tiles. As if on cue, at the far end of the loading alley, Levi saw a vision. A reflection of a fairy tale illustration...
