  • Churches adjusting to COVID-19

    Mathew Brock - Staff Writer|Updated Mar 21, 2020

Coronavirus concerns will force many churchgoers to stay home this weekend. But larger churches will be doing what they can to bring Sunday morning service to the comfort of their members’ homes. While houses of worship are exempt from most government-mandated edicts, most local churches have closed willingly to help cope with the ongoing pandemic. But people of faith are finding ways to worship together, just separately, thanks to live-streaming technology. Faith C... Full story

  • To our readers: We're making changes, too

    Updated Mar 21, 2020

Most of us don’t know anyone gravely ill from COVID-19. At least not yet. But the world pandemic has left us all feeling ill, or at least apprehensive, because of its economic impact. Schools are closed, restaurants are limited to take out and drive-thru, and we can’t go to the movie theater or the mall. Every business in the nation has been impacted, including our newspaper. As a result, we’ll be forced to make some changes over the next few weeks — some aimed at protecting the health of our staff, some we hope will help us... Full story

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Mar 21, 2020

MULESHOE — Talk of COVID-19 is everywhere. And seems to be impacting everything. Even more so across the state line in Texas than in New Mexico. While New Mexico — through Saturday morning — had remained among states reporting fewer than 100 coronavirus cases, Texas is well over that number. On Saturday morning, Texas was nearing 200 confirmed cases, with five deaths from the virus. So, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order limiting public gatherings to 10 peopl... Full story

    Kevin Wilson - Staff Writer|Updated Mar 21, 2020

Don’t gather with 10 or more people. Don’t go to the gym. Don’t go to the movies. Don’t eat inside a restaurant. It’s been a lot to keep up with during the COVID-19 pandemic, with state guidelines seemingly changing as soon as everybody put the infrastructure in to obey the previous guidelines. Thursday’s public health order from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham shuttered numerous varieties of businesses — indoor shopping malls, recreational facilities, health clubs, resort spas, athletic facilities, theaters (including mo... Full story

In our part of the world families plan their weekends around whatever activity their children will be participating in on Saturday. On Sunday we’re ready to see our church family and then another meal on the town. We get by without an abundance of entertainment options...

  • Micek: Don't waste crisis with fear, paranoia

    John Micek|Updated Mar 21, 2020

Shortly after Barack Obama’s first inauguration in 2009, then-White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel got into a bit of hot water when he observed to an interviewer, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.” A decade-and-a-half ago, America was in the throes of The Great Recession, and Emanuel rightfully took a bit of heat for seeming to suggest that it was acceptable for the White House to capitalize on a time of great uncertainty to maximize its political advantage. However clunky Emanuel’s borrowing an epigram...
