    WASHINGTON— The Defense Department will delay furlough notices for its civilian employees for about two weeks while officials analyze the impact of a new spending bill on planned budget cuts, the Pentagon said Thursday.     Portales' season-opening softball doubleheader against Santa Fe Indian School on Friday at Wheeler Park was a total mismatch. Portales pounded out 34 hits iven innings in a 15-0, 16-0 sweep of the Lady Braves, who were also opening their 2013 campaign.   • Quay County officials looking to scoop up gaming license

    The race is on again in Quay County's bid for the state's last racetrack and casino license. A spokesman said Quay County will ask the New Mexico Racing Commission next week to once again open applications. The request follows a state Court of Appeals decision on Thursday that upheld nullification of the license once held by La Mesa racino in Raton.     District Judge Drew Tatum will issue a decision that will have ramifications for the mentally retarded Marcos Maestas, who was arrested in connection with an April 2010 robbery of a bank in Melrose. Christopher Garcia, 34, admitted using his computer to download images of children engaged in sexually explicit conduct while stationed at Cannon Air Force Base in December 2011 and January 2012. He was arrested in an undercover sting conducted by Curry County Sheriff's deputies.   • Pierced water pipe causes road closure

    Martin Luther King was closed south of West Seventh Street most of Friday after a crew installing larger capacity sewer pipes pierced an uncharted water line near the intersection. City Manager Joe Thomas said most of the water was diverted to a nearby ditch. Some minor amounts of water, however, trickled along the east curb of MLK north of West Seventh.
