  • Lady Rams eye another 3A state run

    Eric Butler CMI correspondent

You can almost see a slight grimace in Robbie Crowley's smile when she talks about her softball team's playoff appearances the last couple of years. At Portales High, the Lady Rams have valiantly fought their way at state through what's commonly referred to as the "loser's bracket" in order to get into the championship game — in both 2011 and 2012. Last year, that meant winning four games in 28 hours just to get into the title game against Silver — certainly not an easy road for a team that was the top seed entering the dou...

You might have heard the harmony of string instruments, the humming of a town's dedicated citizens and the foot-tapping that matches the heartbeat of Floyd's community if you were driving on N.M. 267 Thursday night. The Floyd Lions Club's 63rd Annual Country Jamboree's opening night proved to be an exciting one for veteran musicians and new talent alike. The time-honored tradition brings Floyd and surrounding communities out for three nights of country and bluegrass music and fun. Christina Calloway: Portales News-Tribune...

  • Organization assists veterans in business

    Christina Calloway PNT senior writer

Retired U.S. marine Col. Joe Long says looking to start a successful business should be like a walk-off home run; an idea for a business can be a guaranteed winner but you still have to circle all of the bases to get there. Long used baseball analogies, an Elvis Presley impersonation, and a patriotic song to deliver his keynote speech Thursday during the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce quarterly luncheon at the Yam Theatre. Long is director of the New Mexico Veterans... Full story

  • True freedom carries no demands

    Kent McManigal Local columnist

How much freedom do you have? How much freedom do you need? You are free to vote for people to take money from your neighbors on your behalf. You are free to vote to prevent your neighbors from using their property as they see fit. You are free to support violent early morning home invasions in the name of protecting people from plant leaves and unprescribed chemicals — for their own good, and "for the children," of course. You are free to travel where you want, as long as you pay for permission to own a vehicle, and pay f...

  • Despite tough times, legislative session successful

Each day when the Legislature is in session, busloads of school children come from throughout the state to witness democracy in action. Let's hope none of those impressionable youngsters were in attendance on the final morning, when the House squelched debate, ignored the clock and muscled through a 35-page bill that only a handful of members had the chance to read before voting on. It wasn't exactly the way they teach it in civics class, but the bill will make New Mexico's tax structure more competitive with neighboring...

  • My Turn - Sarcasm is my trademark

    Alisa Boswell

Something I think most of us recognize throughout our lives is that we all have that one trait, habit, trademark, that can lighten the mood at a party and have everyone laughing, but which can also be a deadly weapon if we choose it to be. Sarcasm is that trademark for me and is one of my great talents, which can be a good or bad thing. Sarcasm can be a fun-loving way to tease and play with your friends but it can also be a dangerous thing when misused. This is a difficult lesson I've spent most of my young adult life...

  • The heart of the Christian faith

    Joan Clayton

On Easter Sunday Christians all over the world will witness their faith that Jesus of Nazareth was raised from the dead. This is the heart of the Christian faith. Jesus did not remain in the grave like all others. His tomb is empty! Imagine you are Jesus. You look down and see the hopelessness of mankind. Every imaginable kind of sin abounds. You know the only way to save the people. It has to be. You experience every pain and agony ever known to man. You take the sins of the world. Worst of all you are completely alone. You...
