  • Clovis to mull disaster declaration

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 22, 2019

CLOVIS - The city of Clovis still has no idea just how much damage it incurred during last Wednesday's high winds. But it's applying for state and federal reimbursement of some of those repair costs. The city commission plans to consider a disaster declaration for the windstorm during its meeting, scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Thursday at the North Annex of the Clovis-Carver Public Library. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has been sent a request from the state Department of Homeland...

  • Hard gets harder

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Mar 21, 2019

PORTALES - The Portales softball team has had more time to practice than in most seasons, with Nathan Dodge's crew waiting on very few athletes to finish the basketball season. It's a good thing for Portales, as they need the practice. The Rams lost plenty from last year's team, and the competition got a lot harder with state realignment. The Rams remain in District 4-4A, but welcome reigning Class 5A champion Artesia to the fold in what Dodge expects will be a tough season....

  • Country musician to perform

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 19, 2019

CLOVIS — A rising “red dirt” country musician makes his debut in the Land of Enchantment with a concert this weekend in Clovis. Hayden Haddock, 19, is a sophomore at Texas A&M University during the week and a rustic-roots singer-songwriter by weekend. A native of Plano, Texas, he started learning guitar at age 14 after being inspired by an Eric Church concert. He released his first album late last year. A video posted online of him playing in a College Station dorm brought him gigs in Texas, and he soon found himself...

  • Program tailored to individuals

    Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy|Updated Mar 19, 2019

Earlier this year we described moving our preK program back out to our elementary school sites for several reasons — one of which was to make it more convenient for parents with older children at the same school. In addition to this and other changes made to enhance early learning, we’ve also been piloting a program at four of our school sites to support literacy acquisition. Waterford Early Learning is from the Waterford Institute, a non-profit research center,...

  • Roads, jails top talk

    David Grieder|Updated Mar 19, 2019

PORTALES — Among items emerging from the state Legislature discussed in Tuesday’s Roosevelt County Commission meeting, those pertaining to roads and jails were emphasized for improvements they could bring to local services. In her county manager update, Amber Hamilton said “this really was a year for roads” when discussing House Bill 2, the general appropriation act of 2019, which passed the state Senate March 13. “We’re expecting a spike in what’s available there,” she added, noting the county took a...

  • Curry approves road improvements for block grant

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Mar 19, 2019

CLOVIS — Take two: The Curry County Commission on Tuesday unanimously approved road improvements on Curry Road 11 for the county’s annual Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) project this year — a shortened version of last year’s selected project. In 2018, a three-mile stretch of improvements to CR 11 was selected by the commission for CDBG funding. But the application was never submitted because cost estimates came in nearly triple what the county was expecting. After the meeting, Administrative Services...

CLOVIS - The Clovis boys and Portales girls have started off their seasons strong. The Portales boys and Clovis girls have struggled a little bit. Both of those themes continued when the teams met for a non-district contest Monday at Clovis High School. Clovis' boys took the duals 5-4, while the Ram girls took an 8-1 victory. Clovis claimed the boys victory before the final match was complete - a 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 win for Portales' Tyler Underhill over Brandon Heath in No. 5...

  • One up, two down

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 19, 2019

PORTALES — As of Saturday afternoon, Eastern New Mexico’s baseball team had a one-game winning streak. By the end of the day Sunday, the Greyhounds were on a two-game losing skid. Eastern began Saturday’s home doubleheader with an 11-6 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville. But then came the nightcap, which was a real oucher for the Hounds as they found themselves on the business end of a 17-1 loss. Sunday’s solo-game series finale went a lot better for the Greyhounds, though they still endured a heartbreaking 8-7 defeat...

  • Rough weekend for Eastern softball

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 19, 2019

PORTALES — Though the weather was decent, it wasn’t an especially pleasant weekend for Eastern New Mexico’s softball team. Saturday at Greyhound Field, Cameron completed a three-game series sweep of the Hounds by taking both ends of a doubleheader, 6-2 and 11-3. Eastern (10-13) never led at any point throughout the day, but found ways to consistently get runners on base all afternoon. ENMU finished the day with 12 hits combined in the two games, led by junior Elysa Rodriguez, who went 4-for-7 on the afternoon,...

  • Portales falls in season opener

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 19, 2019

PORTALES - Muleshoe spoiled Portales' season and home opener Monday, plating a run in the top of the eighth to take a 4-3 victory at Ram Field. But win or loss, the Rams wouldn't have had much time to let it soak in. Portales (0-1) was slated to play at Clovis Tuesday night, before heading out to Santa Fe for the St. Mike's Invite. "We've got a lot of baseball ahead of us, definitely," Portales coach Dusty Nusser said. "We've got five games just this week. Can't dwell on this...

  • Melrose goes back 2 back

    Ron Warnick, Staff writer|Updated Mar 19, 2019

ALBUQUERQUE - The Melrose boys basketball team finished a mediocre 4-4 in district play and landed just a No. 5 seed in the Class 1A state tournament. But Saturday night, the Buffaloes captured their second straight state championship with a 54-50 victory over No. 2-seeded Fort Sumner, their district rival, at the DreamStyle Arena, aka The Pit. "If you would have told me we'd be in this position this year, I would have told you you were crazy last year," Melrose coach Kevin...

  • Hounds start at home

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Mar 19, 2019

PORTALES — What better way to follow up a successful indoor track season than with an outdoor one. Eastern New Mexico’s track and field team is hoping to carry some of its indoor momentum outdoors and make this a memorable spring. It will already be memorable enough by the Greyhounds hosting the Lone Star Conference championship meet in early May. A title in friendly surroundings would be nice. Making noise at the national meet later in the month, even better. “We’re really excited coming off the indoor conference...

  • 'Cat track wins second straight meet

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 19, 2019

RIO RANCHO — Clovis’ boys track and field team is now 2-for-2. Friday in Rio Rancho, the Wildcats won their second straight meet to open the season, capturing first at the Cleveland Invite with 125.5 points, 35.5 better than the second-place finish notched by host Cleveland. Volcano Vista was third with 71 points. The ’Cats were helped by five different first-place finishes — Jon Fuentes in the 1,600-meter run (4:25.82); Darion Morgan-Haskins in the triple jump (43 feet, 1.75 inches); Pacer Hill in the pole vault (13...

  • Don't think there's much to worry about with future

    Carrie Classon|Updated Mar 19, 2019

I hear a lot about the next generation-entitled whiners with inflated expectations and unrealistic goals. Recently I had dinner with three of them. My husband, Peter, and I are in Oaxaca, Mexico. It feels like the end of the world, this place where the continent becomes so narrow that the mountains stand with their toes in the water. We are staying in a simple hotel with breathtaking views of the ocean and our fellow guests are all a generation younger than us. The night before I wrote this column, the hotel owners served...

  • Tornado season whirling in

    Staff and wire reports|Updated Mar 19, 2019

Eastern New Mexico received its first tornado scare of the season on March 12 when watches were issued throughout the region. Curry, Quay and Roosevelt counties avoided the twisters that night, but neighbors to the south in Dexter saw a touchdown that resulted in multiple minor injuries and several damaged homes. The night reminded old-timers of the deadly tornadoes that struck eastern New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle on March 23, 2007. Heleneta Blevins and Walter Cravy,...

  • No point in legislating morality

    Tom McDonald|Updated Mar 19, 2019

Today’s topic is sin. I’ll try not to get preachy about it. There’s a long list of habit-forming vices that Americans have enjoyed, condemned, regulated and even outlawed over time, but today we’ll consider four in particular — tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and gambling. Our U.S. government has spent a lot of time and effort trying to control each of them, with some of the biggest changes having occurred over the last half-century. Used to be, a lot of communities relegated drinking, pot smoking and betting to the...

  • Sounds like hemp industry good addition

    Guadalupe County Communicator|Updated Mar 19, 2019

Along with its cannabis cousin, hemp has been classified as a Schedule 1 narcotic for most of the 20th century, ostensibly for its appearance (a marijuana look-alike) but really because the timber industry saw it as unwanted competition. Hemp doesn’t get you high, so outlawing it was government at its worst. Now, however, with one sweep of a farm bill, it’s legal. Regulated, so you’ll need a license, but it’s ready to go as America’s newest cash crop. Vincent Cordova, a Puerto de Luna native who went off and made...

  • Windstorm reminder to be ready

    Kent McManigal|Updated Mar 19, 2019

How much did you enjoy our recent “shingle apocalypse” brought on by the little wind storm? Probably about as much as I did. I even went out and took a walk in it. I love the feel of gravel pelting the skin of my face, the grit in my teeth, and debris hitting my body. You just can’t enjoy this kind of thing in lesser places like Paris, France. On my walk, I staggered like I was intoxicated, but I told myself it was a good workout, and good practice if I’m ever on a...

  • Faith: Seeing dead people warms my heart

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Mar 19, 2019

“I see dead people.” So said the cute little boy in the memorable line and creepy “confession” from the 1999 movie “The Sixth Sense.” I hope you don’t find it disturbing when I affirm that I do, too. See dead people, I mean. For me, it happens pretty often and worries me not at all; in fact, it warms my heart. It gives me real hope. And I find it genuinely encouraging to know that I’ll one day join them. In our small town of Muleshoe, it’s not that unusual fo...

  • Come see cowboys take their hand at polo

    Betty Williamson|Updated Mar 19, 2019

If you’ve never heard of “cowboy polo,” you’re not alone. “Just imagine two four-man teams … cowboys or anyone … on horseback, with brooms trying to hit a beach ball into a goal.” That’s how Mark Clark, one of the co-chairs of Relay for Life of Eastern New Mexico, described it to me. “I don’t think there have been too many people that have seen this sort of thing,” Clark said. That changes at 7 p.m. Friday when the “Gone, But Not Forgotten” Cowboy...
