  • Portales firefighter found dead at station

    Portales firefighter Richard McNally, 46, was found dead Sunday in the Portales fire station, according to City Manager Tom Howell. Howell declined to comment on how McNally died, but said injuries appeared to be self-inflicted. Portales Fire Chief Gary Nuckols said he'd have more information Tuesday but was undergoing a stress debriefing with his staff Monday in regard to McNally.     Rebecca Lynn Eminger figures it's a David vs. Goliath type fight, but she's not going to give up a parcel of her land without a fight. In a court filing, Southwestern Public Service Company contends they need less than 6 acres of Eminger's land off New Mexico 88 for construction of a transmission line. SPS cites eminent domain as its right to the property.     A $112 million increase in the state's public education system means changes in testing, more funds for early childhood education, a 1 percent raise for employees and keeping up with rises in insurance costs, according to Sen.     Southwestern Public Service, which provides electricity to eastern New Mexico and West Texas, has already met New Mexico's renewable energy mandate of 15 percent that will go into effect in 2015. Now SPS is seeking proposals for wind energy projects so they can increase the amount of power in the SPS grid.     A dear friend of mine turned 90 this month. What a special treat for me to make the waltz across Texas to the shores of Lake Livingston for the celebration.
