  • Opinion: Jesus shed His blood for all humanity

    Judy Brandon

Religion columnist I heard a remarkable story that has a parallel for this Easter season. More than a half century ago, a young single British nurse served her country faithfully in WWII. She had proven herself to be a loyal and fearless nurse who witnessed the unimaginable as the wounded Britain troops were brought into the makeshift hospitals. The nurse dressed their amputation wounds, lovingly worked to administer medication and gently swabbed the soldiers who were running... Full story

  • Opinion: Too much political TV leads to soul heartburn

    Curtis Shelburne

Religion columnist Confession is “good for the soul.” So I confess: I’ve been watching too much political TV. And that leads to soul heartburn. It’s one thing to want some information. We do, after all, have a big election coming up. Yea, verily, presidential. Surely is looking like I’ll be holding my nose with one hand, voting with the other, and then washing with soap. But I’d like to be a voter who is as informed as he is nauseated. Enough’s enough, though. Sins of exces... Full story

  • Faith: Cannon chaplain retiring

Staff writer [email protected] After 31 and a half years of service, Lt. Col. John Kenyon is retiring as 27th Special Operations Wing chaplain at Cannon Air Force Base. Kenyon, the chaplain at Cannon since 2013, will be honored with an intimate gathering in early April and will officially retire July 1. Kenyon said the ceremony will be “short, sweet and to the point.” “I’m not one for pomp and circumstance,” he said. He may want a brief commemoration, but his career is one that spans decades. Kenyon began his military...

  • Rescue groups cleared to gain release for unwanted animals

Staff Writer [email protected] The Clovis City Commission has cleared the way for area animal rescue groups to gain release for unwanted or unclaimed animals from the Clovis animal control facility. During its March 10 meeting, commission members voted 8-0 in favor of the agreement, which was backed by the Animal Control Task Force. “They (rescue groups) would be able to go to the shelter and pull animals that are on the euthanasia list, then network with other no-kill shelters or other facilities they transfer to,” Animal...

  • Phone case about justice, not tech company's edge

Authorities need a court order for a wiretap to listen in on your phone conversations. They need a judge to sign off on a warrant to search your house. So why should searching your cellphone be any different, if the judicial process has been followed? Apple Inc. and the federal government are battling over accessing newer model iPhones, but the power struggle really is over where the reach of law enforcement can cross the boundary of personal privacy. On Feb. 29, a federal magistrate judge in Brooklyn ruled Apple doesn’t h...

  • McManigal: Power in courtroom belongs to you

Picture yourself on a jury, realizing that even though the defendant broke the law, the law is wrong. Must you obey the judge’s commands to consider only whether the law was broken? Or can you do more? Actually you can, and should, do more. You have hundreds of years of legal history behind you, empowering you to do the right thing. Kent McManigal You should judge whether the violated law should exist, and whether the potential penalties — even when the judge tells you to not...

  • Render: Delegates run show at convention

After the Republican primaries on Tuesday, political pundits, analysts and gurus of any and all persuasions are examining the possibility of a contested national convention. Opinions range from never happen, to a distinct possibility, to lead-pipe cinch that the convention will be contested. Rube Render Donald Trump, the leader in the delegate count, said in an interview that if he were a few delegates shy of the 1,237 needed for election and he was not awarded the...

  • Water authority touts clean audit

Staff Writer [email protected] Citing an adherence to standards, the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority touted a clean audit during Thursday’s regular board meeting in Portales. “In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the respective financial position of the governmental activities and each major fund of the Authority, as of June 30, 2015,” wrote Albuquerque-based Integrity Accounting & Consulting, LLC. “In addition, the financial statements referre...

  • Opinion: No one doesn't look forward to shipping day

Local columnist What comes around once a year and is always an occasion for food, family, friends, and more than a little celebration? Shipping day. You look forward to it for months, just waiting for the day when you can trade a few truckloads of troublesome adolescent bovines for a check that you can spend buying more of the same for next year. In preparation, call your friends, family, and neighbors who have the know-how and the vehicles to help round up a few fields of frisky cattle. Call the brand inspector, make sure...
