  • In tribute: Flavio Garcia always had a big smile

    David Grieder|Updated Mar 10, 2018

For the roles he served and the good impressions he left, it would seem Flavio Garcia lived a lifetime in his 23 years. "He aimed high and always tried to be the best that he could be," read his obituary, published soon after a car accident claimed his life last month outside Friona. His stepfather Manuel Vizcarra told The News that Garcia was leaving his shift at Cargill Meat Solutions and didn't see an oncoming truck that hit his driver side and killed him instantly. Garcia...

    David Grieder|Updated Mar 10, 2018

CLOVIS — For a respite from the High Plains landscape, consider a stroll through the latest gallery up this month at the Clovis-Carver Public Library. “You’ve got to go to the mountains. You’ve got to leave the plains, so to speak,” said Jon Birdsong, who in cooperation with the library and the Pintores Art League has a selection of his paintings on display through March. “I’m an old guy and I spent 31 years in the classroom teaching art. Almost all that period of time, I was doing work on the side,” he said Saturday. “I took...

  • People still talking about red carpet fashion

    Dnieka Hartsfield|Updated Mar 10, 2018

It’s been one week since the 90th Academy Awards aired, but red carpet fashion is still a hot topic and since we're a weekly forum, I'm going to give you a style rewind of my favorite gowns, best dressed men and fashion news from the Oscars. White gowns were noticeably a hit on the red carpet this year. A few of the best white gowns were worn by Laura Dern, who wore a sleek Calvin Klein, Jane Fonda in a shoulder padded custom Balmain dress and Margot Robbie wearing a simple o...

  • Yes, you can quote me - Wendel Sloan

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Mar 10, 2018

For the eighth anniversary of this column (this time around), I am looking back at my greatest hits. And, by hits, I mean mobster — not Billboard top-40. Hits covered in the three-part series will be: 1. Caustic 2. Humorous and 3. Reflective. Here are some of the caustic things I have written: • “What does ‘God Bless America’ actually mean? How I would admire the intellectual courage of one politician admitting they are just using a reflexive, coded valediction to appeal to...

  • Tooth fairy payout lost 11 percent

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Mar 10, 2018

I’m not sure if it’s inattention, bad hearing or fake news, but what my wife and I thought we heard on a popular morning show turns out to be wrong. We heard the average price that the tooth fairy is leaving these days was approaching $5 a tooth. That flabbergasted both of us, as we clearly remember being ecstatic over finding a big ole quarter under our pillow. I’m pretty sure there might have been a few times when I only got a dime. But that was back when the tooth fairy...

  • Zinke's turbine story for the birds

    Kevin Wilson, Managing editor|Updated Mar 10, 2018
    1

We haven’t used canaries in coal mines in more than 30 years, but pretty much everybody knows the adage in some form and how it came to be. Coal miners, unable to know what invisible gases were dangerous ina mine, brought a canary with them. Since the birds were more sensitive to the gases, their deaths would be a clear omen to miners that they needed to leave. The process ended in 1986 when man created devices that could detect toxic gas levels. They worked better than canaries, and it meant we no longer had to kill c...

  • The day Portales burned

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Mar 10, 2018

PORTALES — Tower Theater owners Alvie and Frances Smith were house shopping outside Portales when Alvie first noticed the smoke bellowing from the downtown area. "He said he had a real funny feeling," Daughter Kay Manis remembers. "He said, 'Maybe I better go downtown and make sure the theater's OK.'" The theater was not OK. Downtown Portales was not OK. Forty years ago this week, on March 10, 1978, Portales burned. The fire started just after 1 p.m. in a sweet potato w... Full story

  • Death penalty system fallen into absurdity

    Los Angeles Times|Updated Mar 10, 2018

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a death penalty case that hinges on a fine point. The court has ruled in the past that it is unconstitutional to execute people who can’t understand why they face death at the hands of the state — usually people with mental illnesses or diminished intellectual abilities. Vernon Madison, who killed a Mobile, Alabama, police officer in 1985, knows the state intends to execute him for committing a murder, but a series of strokes and other ailments have left him incontinent, barely able to...

  • Memories still remain

    David Grieder|Updated Mar 10, 2018

CLOVIS — It was at various times a burger spot, a frame shop and a specialty grocery store. Across its different iterations over the decades, the building at 1548 Thornton was also a popular daytime escape for students across the road at Clovis High School. This week, after years of disuse, a public hazard designation and a final "hurrah" by firefighters, the structure was razed, leaving only a dusty vacant lot in its place. "I was in high school in 1963 ... and was at lunch i...

  • Pecos denies Texico perfect season

    Peter Stein|Updated Mar 10, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE — There's no shame in a red trophy, but it wasn't quite the hue Texico's boys basketball team had in mind. The top-seeded Wolverines wound up taking home the red one — awarded to state-tournament runners up — after losing Saturday morning's Class 3A state championship game 58-44 to third-seeded Pecos, which successfully defended its state crown and bagged another blue trophy with a dominant fourth quarter at Albuquerque's Dreamstyle Arena. Texico had entered Satur...

    Peter Stein|Updated Mar 10, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE — This wasn't your garden variety Melrose boys basketball game. But then, it wasn't your garden variety boys basketball game, period. The Buffaloes, used to big leads and comfortable victories, faced a war with Maxwell in Saturday morning's Class A state championship game at Albuquerque's Dreamstyle Arena, competition and setting befitting the stakes. A Melrose team more accustomed to cruising, saw itself down by a bunch in the first few minutes of Saturday's g... Full story

  • Rams reload for title defense

    Eric Murray|Updated Mar 10, 2018

PORTALES — Last year, Portales High's baseball won its second-ever state title, as it defeated district foe Hope Christian 8-4. For the Rams (24-7), despite making it to the 4A title game, the 2017 season was no cake walk. However, thanks to the leadership and production of four key seniors — Joe Ortega, Darion Ontiveros, Emilio Lovato and Alex Galvan — the Rams overcame some early growing pains and turned it on when they needed to, as they captured their first title since...
