  • Portales pulls away in fourth to top Moriarty for 4A title

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 9, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE — Moriarty proved to Portales it’s tough to beat a team four times in a season. But Portales proved it was toughest when the fourth quarter came Friday at The Pit. Senior Taylee Rippee posted a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds, and the Portales Rams pulled away from their District 4-4A rivals late for a 50-39 win and the Class 4A state championship. Zamorye Cox scored 11 for Portales (28-2), which closed out the season on a 19-game winning streak with 18 of them by double figures. Kelly Fraze, scoreles...

  • Texico beats Tohatchi for 3A title on last-second shot

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 9, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE — Maryelle Dickerman had 20 points, including the game-winning layup with five seconds left, and the Texico Wolverines claimed their second Class 3A title in three years with a 48-47 nailbiter win over Tohatchi on Friday at The Pit in Albuquerque. Junior Baylee Sours scored 14 points and assisted on the winning basket for Texico (28-4), which rallied from an early deficit and withstood a 21-point quarter from the defending champion Cougars (24-7). Tohatchi took a late 47-46 lead when Brianna Denetso hit a c...

  • Elida makes it eight consecutive titles

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 9, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE — Eight is enough for the Elida Tigers. For now, at least. Lacy Ferguson scored 22 points to lead three in double figures, and Elida pulled away in the second quarter to claim a 58-44 win over Melrose for their eighth-consecutive small-school basketball championship Friday morning at The Pit. With the win, Elida (24-7) tied Kirtland Central (1990-1997) for most consecutive championships. The Tigers started their streak in 2011 as a Class B school, and have won the last four in Class 1A with each of the last two c... Full story

  • 'No statute or regulation shall be enacted into law unless...'

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Mar 9, 2018

As I wrote this week’s weak column, Texans were one day away from the 2018 state primary election. I was too late to add one more ill-fated proposition to the list of mostly D.O.A. propositions already on the ballot. But I’d like to submit this one: “No statute or regulation shall be enacted into law unless two existing laws or regulations are rescinded, removed, deleted, trashed, shredded, deep-sixed, done away with, gone.” I should’ve floated that idea to some political...

  • Facing road of life with God

    Judy Brandon|Updated Mar 9, 2018

One of my favorite scriptures in the Bible is Proverbs 3:6. The wise man wrote: “In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Paths indicate roads to travel which culminates in a journey. Perhaps the writer of Proverbs realized his human frailty in predicting the unknown direction of his own personal road in life and realized that God would guide him on that unfamiliar road. So what is the interest for us? A personal illustration will help to cla...

  • Pocket load important when leaving home

    Audra Brown|Updated Mar 9, 2018

What do you need handy when you leave the house? That’s an important question in any situation. Some common contents of pockets or purse are keys, currency and, these days, a phone. Not to mention your identification, and all those other important papers and cards. Beyond the basics, it might be a good idea to carry a pen and asset of earbuds. Now, this makes sense, but it doesn’t quite mesh with the morning pocket procedure when you don’t expect to open the outside gate....

  • Cleveland edges Clovis in tournament opener

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 9, 2018

RIO RANCHO — Jaren Jackson allowed one run over six innings, and went 2-for-3 with an RBI single as the Cleveland Storm edged the Clovis Wildcats 3-1 for their first win in four tries to open the Cleveland Invitational on Thursday afternoon. Senior starter Sebastian Nunez didn’t pitch poorly, but ended up the hard-luck loser for Clovis (4-2) “We hurt ourselves with walks early,” Clovis coach Richard Cruce said. “We allowed two walks to score in the game.” Clovis stranded seven runners, and leadoff hitters went 0-for-7 on... Full story

  • Portales returns to 4A title game with win over Shiprock

The Staff of the News|Updated Mar 9, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE — Sometimes, coaches don't really need to make halftime adjustments, even in close state tournament games. That happened to be the case in Thursday's girls basketball 4A semifinal between Portales and Shiprock. The No. 1 Rams held a slim lead at half, but exploded in the third quarter to take the 65-54 win, advancing them to today's title game against Moriarty. "We scored the last five points of the first half, so that gave us a lot of momentum going into h... Full story

  • Elida makes eighth consecutive state title game

    Peter Stein|Updated Mar 9, 2018

BERNALILLO — Naturally, this is right where the Elida girls basketball team expected to be at this time — in the Class 1A state championship game. The Lady Tigers' program is, after all, a seven-time defending state champ, so earning a spot in an eighth-straight title game — tipping off today in The Pit at 11:30 a.m. — by virtue of Thursday's 39-30 victory over Des Moines at Bernalillo High School was not a huge surprise. Not that the Tigers ever take anything for granted...

Glamping is a bona fide word Have you ever gone “camping” with electricity and running water? Do you like to post an image of an inflamed dumpster on social media when something goes wrong? Glamping, the portmanteau of glamorous and camping, and dumpster fire, the internet’s go-to image when disaster strikes, were two of the 850 words and definitions added to Merriam-Webster Dictionary on Monday. Other words and definitions now recognized by Merriam-Webster include mansplain (to explain something to a woman in a conde...

  • Area capital outlay projects approved

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Mar 9, 2018

Several local institutions and municipalities will be beneficiaries of the capital outlay projects approved Wednesday by Gov. Susana Martinez. The Legislature sends the projects to Martinez’s desk who then has the option to veto anything she disagrees with, though only one local proposal met such a fate. One of the big winners was Curry county, which secured $713,400 for road improvements and $46,800 for a new heating system at the Curry County Public Health Office. Curry County Manager Lance Pyle said he expects the m...

A Portales woman was arrested Wednesday in connection with an August incident in which one horse was found dead and seven other animals were found severely malnourished in Curry County. Twila Williams, 49, was booked into the Curry County Adult Detention Center just before 3 p.m. Wednesday after she was arrested in Portales. She is charged with one count of extreme cruelty to animals. Records did not address bond information and it wasn't clear why she was arrested Wednesday,... Full story

  • Texico back in 3A girls title game with rout of Clayton

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 9, 2018

RIO RANCHO — Three out of four was a pretty nice place for the Texico Wolverines to be Thursday. They’re hoping they can say the same thing Friday. Junior guard Baylee Sours scored 27 points, and the Texico Wolverines are back in the Class 3A finals with a 63-42 victory over Clayton Thursday at the Santa Ana Star Center. Maryelle Dickerman added 18 for Texico (25-4), which led for the final 29:32 and by as many as 22 points in its fourth and final matchup of the season with the Yellowjackets. Texico took three of the fou... Full story

  • Melrose girls make it back to 1A title game

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 8, 2018

BERNALILLO — Melrose has beaten top-seeded Elida once this season, taking a 36-32 nailbiter for the District 4-1A championship. The Buffaloes just barely earned another shot, taking their second close game in as many days — 46-42 over third-seeded Quemado — to reach their second-straight 1A title game and fourth-straight state championship appearance. Melrose (23-7), winners of Class 2A in 2015 and 2016, now hopes to do what its volleyball team did in November — end Elida’s title streak at seven seasons. “The big things we’v...

EPCOG is absolutely not ‘mismanaged’ I am writing regarding Jose Griego’s comments made in a paid political ad published Friday in The News. In this ad, Griego states that Eastern Plains Council of Governments is being mismanaged. I have been the executive director of EPCOG since December 2010, and I would like to assure the members of EPCOG and the taxpayers of the seven counties that we represent that EPCOG is absolutely not “mismanaged.” While there were some accounting issues in the past, these issues have long since bee...

  • Texico one win from perfect season

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 8, 2018

RIO RANCHO — Senior Nathan Phipps had game-highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Texico moved one step away from securing the third perfect season in Class 3A boys history with a 53-39 victory Thursday over district rival Santa Rosa at the Santa Ana Star Center. Dalton Thatcher added 11 for Texico (29-0), which goes for its sixth title in school history and second in three seasons at 10 a.m. Saturday against either Pecos or Estancia. The Wolverines earned their fourth victory of the season over the Lions (19-10), who k...

  • Melrose boys get by Quemado, advance to 1A title game

    Peter Stein|Updated Mar 8, 2018

BERNALILLO – Yes, the Melrose boys basketball team is heading to Saturday morning’s Class A state championship game at The Pit in Albuquerque. But no, Thursday’s semifinal victory was not another Buffalo stampede as most of their games have been this season. The Buffs did beat Quemado 55-39 Thursday at Bernalillo High School, a solid margin indeed. Earlier in the game, though, even well into the second half, things were a little sticky. The Buffaloes prevailed, however, seizing control by the third quarter’s end and never rel...
