  • Render: Political correctness in driver's seat

A story is told about Abraham Lincoln at a political campaign session when he asked one of his questioners: “How many legs would a dog have if we called the dog’s tail, a leg.” “Five,” the questioner answered. “No,” Lincoln responded. “Calling a dog’s tail a leg, doesn’t make it a leg.” link Rube Render Abe never met Caitlyn Jenner. I’m sure he would state today that, “Calling a man a trans woman doesn’t make him a female.” Some historically women’s colleges, including B...

  • McManigal: Out with the old, in with the new

When thinking of my favorite seasons, autumn is definitely in the top four. Just where it ranks depends on when you ask me. Some of the more heavily forested places in which I have lived offer more in the way of fall colors, but no matter where I am, I always feel a sense of anticipation as the days get shorter and cooler, and the clocks are turned back to a more reasonable setting. link Kent McManigal Funny thing about fall: some people believe it looks like everything is...

  • Prison staffing, officer pay must become priorities

When is the last time you put in a 72-hour workweek on any kind of job, much less a dangerous one? Probably never, if you are an average 40-hour-a-week worker. Unfortunately, due to difficulty in recruiting and retaining prison officers, New Mexico’s state-run prisons are seriously understaffed, and some officers are working those crushing workweeks. As Sgt. Robert Darnell, a four-year corrections officer at the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility in Los Lunas, puts it: “How are you supposed to watch over these (in... Full story

Legislating ills of world pointless By design, life is essentially a series of events varying in a wide range of good to bad consequences. Attempts to legislate the prohibition of all the bad or negative aspects of life is pointless. This country is governed by the rule of law, yet we have yet to somehow prohibit prostitution, the unauthorized sale of tobacco or alcohol to minors. The same can be said for such things as arson, thievery, incest, rape, scams etc. The intervention of prayer doesn’t seem to be effective e...

  • Can't blame anyone for staying with what they know

Local columnist Work boots and ground clearance: You need one to get there and the other to get anything done. Friends from town used to come out and see me and I usually had to pick them up at the gate. Work boots weren’t even an option; the best you could hope for was that they had some sneakers they didn’t mind getting dirty. They got to ride on the tractor with me, or whatever equipment I was running that day. I know it wasn’t what they expected, but it was as good as I could do. A day off to run around and do nothing was... Full story

Religion columnist Have you ever moved from one house to another? Over the years, our family has moved several times. Many families, especially in this area, move thousands of miles away. • Success should mean more than numbers

    Curtis Shelburne

Religion columnist I wish we would consider being a bit slower to trust our culture’s methods of evaluating “success.” In our terminally shallow society, absolutely the only thing you have to possess in order to be considered “successful” is — this will not surprise you — a big pile of money. In our culture, if your bank balance is almost as vast as your ego, very few will pause to notice how many vows and hearts you’ve broken, how many times you’ve stabbed colleagues in the... Full story
