The shooting of a Portales man Friday in the parking lot of a motel on Mabry Drive was "supposedly" over a stolen stereo system, according to a Clovis police incident report obtained Monday. Jerry Abeyta, 26, was shot in the chest and arm area, according to the report. He was reported in serious but stable condition Saturday at a Lubbock Hospital. Floyd High School sophomore Lane Wallace was inducted as a 4-H state diplomat during the annual 4-H senior leadership retreat in Albuquerque in January. Wallace joins Sierra Baca of Santa Fe County, Kylie Butterfield of De Baca County and Shelby Herrera of Valencia County as the 2012 state diplomats. The city of Portales will use a central polling place — the auditorium in the Portales Memorial Building — for today's election. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. It is the first time one poll location will be used in a municipal election. The city did use one polling location in special election last year for Sunday alcohol sales. Four councilor seats are up for election today, with Ward C councilor Leo Lovett running unopposed.
