    David Grieder|Updated Mar 4, 2019

PORTALES — The former daycare operators convicted last month of reckless child abuse are scheduled Monday for sentencing. Their defense attorney is meanwhile pursuing motions to appeal or mitigate the guilty verdicts. Mother-daughter Mary and Sandi Taylor each face 36 years in prison on dual convictions of child abuse by reckless disregard, pertaining to the death of one girl and serious injury to another. The women left both young children in a hot car in July of 2017 in Portales. Tye Harmon filed multiple motions in r...

  • Another viewpoint: People with terminal illnesses deserve to choose quality of life

    The Taos News|Updated Mar 2, 2019

Life is precious. So is quality of life. We do not get to choose when our lives begin. Most of us don’t get to choose when it ends. But some — like those diagnosed with a terminal illness or an illness such as Alzheimer’s that slowly but most assuredly kills the brain — know what is coming and may even have an estimated time frame before they die. How they choose to live within that time is important. Just as important is whether or not they should have the right to choose how and when they die. Avis Vermilye chose to end...

  • Chasing scandals unlikely to prevent second Trump term

    Los Angeles Times|Updated Mar 2, 2019

Republicans on the House Oversight and Reform Committee did themselves no favors Wednesday by approaching Michael Cohen as a man to be tarred and feathered, not probed as a witness. But they raised a question about the hearing that Democrats had no good answer for: What was the point? Cohen was there to dish dirt on his former employer, erstwhile real estate entrepreneur Donald J. Trump. And Democrats were eager to accumulate it as Cohen recited his view of Trump’s legal, ethical and moral failings. Members of the majority s...

  • Trump's position with GOP solidified

    Rich Lowry|Updated Mar 2, 2019

The race for 2020 is taking shape, although there are still significant unknowns, including whether Donald Trump will get a serious primary challenge. His fiercest Republican critics say, “Yes — please, please, yes.” They are probably wrong, and it’s certainly nothing to root for. Trump’s dominance of the party begins with his lockdown support of the right, forcing any primary challenger to the left. This isn’t fertile territory. Self-identified moderates and liberals ar...

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Mar 2, 2019

Or else what? Looks like Estancia just found out. Friday night was the sound of a hammer dropping, as the New Mexico Activities Association dealt a huge penalty to the boy’s basketball team, along with the entire school and the community of about 1,600 people less than an hour from Albuquerque. Three fans were ejected during the Bears’ District 6-2A home tournament game, a 67-66 loss in triple overtime. Had that happened at one of our area schools, I can assure you the athletic director would receive a stern warning from the...

  • Left, Right ... wrong; Time to reduce size, impact of government

    David Stevens|Updated Mar 2, 2019

Many New Mexicans are outraged because the state’s Democrats are about to pass the largest tax increase in the state’s history. House Bill 6 raises income taxes, car registration fees and tobacco taxes all of which are directly aimed at working families across New Mexico.” All this at a time...

  • Adding 'Oh Come Angel Band' to my list of hymns

    Karl Terry|Updated Mar 1, 2019

I got a song stuck in my brain last week — not a classic rock tune, but a classic maybe. We hadn’t sung the hymn “Oh Come Angel Band” or “My Latest Sun is Sinking Fast” in church for a good while. The last time I heard it, in fact, might have been in re-watching the movie “O Brother Where Art Thou.” Because we hadn’t done it recently, and maybe because some of the younger folks didn’t even know it, it was pretty rough in our a cappella Church of Christ for the first verse. Tho...
