  • Cancer claims Portales mayor

David Stevens and Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Mar 8, 2018

In March 2015, a line break left Portales without water for more than 24 hours. Mayor Sharon King was facing far more serious problems at the time, fighting for her life against cancer. But her constituents were still on her mind. "We were in Lubbock, staying overnight (for a chemotherapy treatment), and she was having a really tough time," remembered King's friend, Gayla Brumfield. "I was watching her and she had all these emails and Facebook messages and she responded to... Full story

  • Higher seeds cruise in girls tournament

    Peter Stein|Updated Mar 3, 2018

MELROSE — Melrose High's girls basketball team set the tone for Friday's Class 1A opening-round state playoff game in the first quarter. The Lady Buffaloes can only hope that is a microcosm of the tournament itself. The second-seeded Lady Buffs would certainly like Friday's 60-36 home victory over 15th-seeded Walatowa Charter to be a tone-setter for the state tournament, a sign that they're on their way to hoisting a trophy next Saturday. They've taken step one of four, with t...

  • Clovis baseball suffers first setback of season

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 3, 2018

HOBBS — Colin Turner went 3-for-3, and Artesia High took advantage of early miscues for a 5-0 lead after two innings and an eventual 6-4 triumph over Clovis in the second day of the Hobbs Round Robin baseball tournament. “They put the ball in play,” Clovis coach Richard Cruce said, “and basically we made some mistakes that extended innings for them. They took advantage.” Clovis (3-1) will face Hobbs today at 1 p.m. to close out the three-day affair. Cruce said Colson Faircloth will be the likely starter for the Wildcats.... Full story

  • Las Cruces ousts Clovis girls

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 3, 2018

LAS CRUCES — For both of Friday’s teams in the 5 vs. 12 Class 6A matchup, it was the same story. For host Las Cruces High, it was another easy home win, as the Bulldawgs moved to 14-2 in their friendly confines. For Clovis, it was another night of offensive struggles in a 66-41 defeat. Clovis only trailed 28-23 at the half, but then the basket just seemed to have a lid for the Wildcats (17-13). “There’s no other way to explain it. We went cold. We got just six points in that third period, and that’s when they pulled aw... Full story

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 3, 2018

FRISCO, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team had a season of nail-biting wins and improbable losses, a season in which the Greyhounds won 13 of 17 between Dec. 9 and Feb. 17, a playoff season. But that season ended with a thud Friday afternoon when the fifth-seeded Hounds were blasted 83-61 by fourth-seeded Tarleton State in the Lone Star Conference tournament at Frisco's Dr Pepper Arena. The TexAnns (19-10), last year's tournament champion, m...

The Buffaloes (26-3) advance to Saturday night’s semifinal game against No. 4 seed Texas A&M-Com...

    Eric Murray|Updated Mar 3, 2018

PORTALES — Four became three pretty quickly. That's the number of wins now standing in the way of a Class 4A championship for the Portales Rams. • Reporter's notebook: Sales springing up

    David Grieder|Updated Mar 3, 2018

Though spring is not officially sprung for a couple of more weeks, that doesn’t mean it’s too early to start cleaning house. The first day of March was a sunny one for Jean Workheiser, who debuted Thursday a yard sale at her house on Hickory Street lasting through today. She said it’s a way for her and her husband to raise funds for their next trip to San Antonio while also clearing some space. Yard sales naturally blossom in greater numbers as the weather outdoors becomes more tolerable, she observed. Meanwhile, this after...
