  • Parishioners observe Ash Wednesday on the go

    Kurt Munz-Raper|Updated Mar 3, 2017

CLOVIS - Ash Wednesday, as it always has, marks the start of Lent, a time to reflect on service and being part of the body of Christ. But in this day and age, a busy schedule can make it tough for members to make it to Ash Wednesday services, according to local pastors. This is what inspired St. James Episcopal Church Pastor Alan Brockmeier to start Ashes to Go at the church at lunch time Wednesday. "It's so the imposition of ashes can be done during their (church members')...

The organization is hosting their annual awards banquet from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 21 at the Clovis Civic Center. "We're just trying to remind ourselves to have fun, to keep it fun," Burch said. Burch said the banquet is h...

  • Rules are rules, except when they need to be flipped

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Mar 3, 2017

“For everything there is a season,” writes the wise man in Ecclesiastes 3. Not only is that smart fellow pointing us to a profound truth, his English translators are phrasing it beautifully. The vast majority of those folks are smart enough themselves not to mess much with the English construction of this well-known Scripture. If you’re not an English major, I hereby give you my blessing to tune out. Blessing or not, if you’re not some sort of word person, you’ll soon turn...

  • Cats shut out Artesia in Hobbs tournament

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 3, 2017

HOBBS — Junior Sebastian Nunez may be emerging as a pitching ace for the Clovis High baseball team. Nunez threw his second consecutive complete game on Thursday as the Wildcats edged Artesia 1-0 on the opening day of a round-robin baseball tournament hosted by Hobbs. Nunez tossed a five-hitter in a 4-1 win over Hobbs last week, giving the Cats (2-1) a split of their season-opening doubleheader. He worked another five-hitter on Thursday and made a first-inning run stand up. Six teams are in the tournament, each playing t...

  • Clovis officials introduce tax hike ordinance

    Douglas Clark|Updated Mar 3, 2017

As a means of offsetting a projected eight-figure financial hit spurred by “hold harmless” losses, the Clovis City Commission voted unanimously Thursday to introduce a resolution to implement a one-eighth of 1 percent gross receipts tax increase. Hold harmless, eliminated in the 2013 state legislative session, was a provision by which the state paid municipalities for lost revenues from the 2005 elimination of food and prescription drugs from gross receipts tax collection. As a condition of the waiver, municipalities are all...

  • Texico looks to defend 3A girls crown as second seed

    Dave Wagner|Updated Mar 3, 2017

CLOVIS — Texico has been a regular in Class 3A (formerly 2A) state competition over the last decade or two, and this year might be no different. The Lady Wolverines (19-7) take the No. 2 seed into this weekend’s 3A round-of-16, and host 15th-seeded Raton (14-12) in a 6 p.m. tipoff today. Texico coach Richard Luscombe said he has limited information on the Lady Tigers. “I saw the most recent game they played (on film),” he said. “They don’t go real deep off the bench. If we play kind of to our potential, like we have been l...

On this date ... 1977: A regular reader of the "Memo ... from the editor" column in the Clovis News-Journal offered a substitute for coffee. "Take a potato, peel it and slice it very thin, then bake it in the oven until crisp," Editor Bill Southard wrote. "Crush the potato slices with a rolling pin until they're as fine as coffee grounds, then pour boiling water over them." The unnamed reader said the result was delicious, except for one thing: The potato bits had a tendency...

  • Let your legacy show you loved God

    Judy Brandon|Updated Mar 3, 2017

Do you ever think about what you will be known for when you are gone? How will you be remembered because of the mark that you leave on this world? Benjamin Franklin once said, “If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are dead, either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.” I believe Franklin summed up the definition of life legacy pretty well. When we think about certain people, great causes, phrases or remembrances seem to correspond to their leg...

  • We live in a place of myth, legend

    Audra Brown|Updated Mar 3, 2017

It’s spring on the High Plains. Time for sunny days, shipping cattle off of wheat pasture, and straight-line winds not normally seen on land. Conventional expectations are fine, but there are more than a few things that defy the definition you’ll usually find in the encyclopedia. Amateur wind speed identification charts that I’ve seen usually stop at 50 mph with a note that you just don’t see that on land except in a circular storm of the hurricane or cyclone variety. This le...
