PORTALES — Area lawmakers were in a celebratory mood on Thursday as they spoke at the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce Legislative Luncheon about the 2018 Legislature. Rep. Dennis Roch, R-Logan, marveled at "the difference a year makes," adding the state has gone from a $200 million budget shortfall in the 2017 session to a $200 million surplus in the 2018 session. "Every opportunity under the sun, people were saying, 'Oh, we gotta raise taxes. We should raise taxes on v... Full story

The action will begin 11:30 a.m. MST, with West Texas and Texas A&M-Commerce resuming their game. The Lady Buffs lead 32-26 a...

  • God ready to bestow favor on anyone

    Judy Brandon|Updated Mar 1, 2018

Sometimes Joseph is called the most Christ like character of the Old Testament. But at one time, Joseph’s young life appeared to be in shambles. How did this happen? Joseph worked as a shepherd with all his other brothers on his father Jacob’s land. One day, Jacob sent 17 year old Joseph out to check on his brothers who were watching their grazing sheep in a nearby territory. Much family baggage, emotional conflict and resentment was evident in this large family. Spe...

  • Genuine rest comes from God's grace, power

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Mar 1, 2018

Why is resting so hard? One definition, “freedom from activity or labor,” surely makes “rest” sound rather appealing, maybe even like something we should try on occasion. Just a brief Internet search will result in scads of wise quotations on the benefits of rest. Some sound almost like a sop to Type-A hyperactives who won’t say “good morning” unless it fits into their business plan and the utterance is duly scheduled. Charles Spurgeon was not among that group, but he told t...

  • Best things high on hand-me-down chain

    Audra Brown|Updated Mar 1, 2018

Hand-me-downs are a thing that happens just about everywhere. Older siblings pass down clothes, toys, and maybe even a few lessons to their younger siblings, cousins, or even friends. It’s economical and can sometimes result in better stuff than if you’d bought it new. Nobody likes to break in the sorts of things that need to be broken in. Of course, there are some things that are best just thrown away when the original owner can’t use them anymore, but let’s not focus on thos...

  • ENMU men hope for Texas-sized upset

    Eric Murray|Updated Mar 1, 2018

PORTALES — Maurice Coleman's jumper. Arcaim Lallemand's block. LaMarquis Thompson's defensive rebound. Without those things happening in the closing seconds of last Saturday's win at Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Eastern New Mexico men's basketball team would have narrowly been on the outside looking in for the Lone Star Conference Tournament for a second consecutive season. Luckily for head coach Tres Segler and company, the Hounds (11-16, 6-12 LSC) managed to pull off a 58-56 v...

  • Rams seek long tournament ride

    Eric Murray|Updated Mar 1, 2018

PORTALES — Like a roller coaster ride, Portales boys basketball has seen plenty of ups and downs this season, including a few sharp twists and turns. However, as the Rams embark on Class 4A State Tournament, they hope that their ride accelerates 90 miles per hour upward, as they believe that they're as good as any team in the state — regardless of ranking. "If we play to our capability, we can go far," Rams coach Rickie McBroom explained. "We have to make sure that we pla... Full story

  • Clovis baseball team goes to 3-0

The Staff of the News|Updated Mar 1, 2018

HOBBS — Clovis High’s baseball team may have to show some heart and resiliency this season if a state championship is in the cards. If so, Thursday was a good test for the Wildcats, who rallied for a seventh-inning tie against Carlsbad before winning 2-1 in the eighth on senior Colson Faircloth’s walk-off single that scored senior Jace Piepkorn in a Hobbs round-robin tournament game. “I’m very proud of the kids and the way they stayed the course and believed in one another,” Clovis baseball coach Richard Cruce said. “They... Full story

  • ENMU's Edgemon named LSC Freshman of the Year

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 1, 2018

FRISCO, Texas — Kaylee Edgemon didn't start a game all season for Eastern New Mexico. But she's started off her career in the Lone Star Conference quite well. Edgemon was named the LSC's freshman of the year Wednesday night at the conclusion of the conference banquet, held on the eve of the tournament. Edgemon is the third Greyhound to win an LSC freshman award, joining Heather Brown (2004, South Division) and Jennifer Goble (1991). It is the seventh time an ENMU women's p...

  • Reporter's notebook: Once upon a time

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Mar 1, 2018

Fans of Hollywood, get ready: Details for Director Quentin Tarantino’s new film have surfaced. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” has been described by Tarantino as “a story that takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. Actor Rick Dalton, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, and his stunt double Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt, are “struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore,” Tarantino told the Hollywood Reporter. “But Rick has a very famous nex...

A witness told police he saw her running away from a car before a man "grabbed her by her hair and slammed her head-first onto the paved road." The man, later identified as Baca's former boyfriend, Aaron Morrisette, drove away, leaving her critically injured. Morrisette was soon captured, convicted and sentenced to prison for 60 years in connection with the attack. Baca survived, and, today, she i...

Martin, who opted not to run for a second four-year term in Tuesday’s municipal election, was championed for his ability to look at perspectives other commissioners might otherwise miss. “It’s a different, bright light you bring,” Commissioner Sandra Taylor-Sawyer said in her remarks to Martin. Mayor David Lansford closed Thursday’s commission meeting with a joki...
