The Melrose Buffaloes are favored for a Class 1A boys three-peat, and seven of the 10 of the selections from Curry and Roosevelt counties will open the state basketball tournament at home. The New Mexico Activities Association announced the 10 tournament brackets Sunday, with first-round games at higher seeds and the remaining rounds in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. All championship games will be at The Pit. Melrose brings a 20-game winning streak into the tournament, and will host 16th seed Dora Saturday. The Portales girls...

  • Portales repeats in 4-4A

    Dave Wagner - Staff writer|Updated Feb 29, 2020

PORTALES — An early lead against a capable opponent can sure come in handy sometimes. Portales High’s girls got just that on Friday, scoring 13 consecutive points after Roswell Goddard tallied the game’s first basket and going on to a 57-45 win over the turnover-prone Lady Rockets in the District 4-4A tournament championship game at the Ram Athletic Center. Sophomore forward Kylyie Paden had seven points in the early run, and the Lady Rams (20-7) were able to keep Godda...

  • Two down for Texico

    Peter Stein - Staff writer|Updated Feb 29, 2020

TEXICO — Two down, one to go. The Lady Wolverines, like any local basketball team, had three goals for their season — 1) win their district in the regular season, 2) win their postseason district tournament, 3) win a state championship. Friday at Texico Sports Arena, the Lady Wolverines achieved the second of those two goals, pulling away from Pecos in the fourth quarter to win 56-43 and capture the postseason District 7-2A crown for the second straight year. Exactly a wee...

ENMU (20-8, 14-8 LSC) will open the tournament on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. game against 12th-seeded Oklahoma Christian. The final three rounds of the event will be played Thursday through Sunday in Frisco, Texas. ENMU finished in a tie with Angelo State for fifth...

  • Wild(cat) finish

    Peter Stein - Staff writer|Updated Feb 29, 2020

CLOVIS — No matter what happened Saturday night in Clovis High’s District 4-5A boys basketball championship game at Hobbs, the Wildcats’ semifinal victory over Roswell on Thursday at Rock Staubus Gymnasium was gigantic. For a couple of reasons. Of course there was the obvious — beating the Coyotes 44-43 on Josiah Lombrana’s last-second baseline jumper gave the Wildcats a chance to defend their district title. But looking ahead a bit, Clovis wants to make a run in the state 5A...

  • Clovis girls hope win secures bracket bid

    Peter Stein - Staff writer|Updated Feb 29, 2020

CLOVIS — Sunday should be as suspenseful as it is interesting for the Clovis girls basketball team. Will the Lady Wildcats, 12-16 after Thursday night’s 32-21 loss at Carlsbad, be deemed good enough for a state-tournament seed? Did they do enough with Tuesday night’s 48-32 home win over Roswell? The Lady ’Cats can only hope. Victories in both games probably would’ve done it. But now ... “That win (Tuesday) might have solidified us making the playoffs,” Clovis head coach Jeff R...

  • Lions claim pitcher's duel

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 29, 2020

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Right-hander Brayden Johnson threw a complete game four-hitter, outpitching Eastern New Mexico University’s Ethan Coombes, and Arkansas-Fort Smith held on for a 2-1 Lone Star Conference win over the Greyhounds on Saturday in the first of two seven-inning games. Three of the hits came in the top of the seventh, ENMU (2-14, 2-14 LSC) broke through on a two-out RBI single by left fielder Camden Matthews, but Johnson got designated hitter Tristan Bowden on a grounder to second to leave the go-ahead runs str...

  • Lovington shocks Portales in 4-4A opener

    Dave Wagner - Staff Writer|Updated Feb 29, 2020

PORTALES — Rickie McBroom was at a bit of a loss for words. In a game where his Portales High boys squad led most of the way, including by 15 points in the second quarter, things got away late and the Rams dropped a 60-58 decision to Lovington on Tuesday night in the opening game of the District 4-4A tournament at the Ram Athletic Center. With the contest tied in the closing seconds, the Rams appeared to secure a defensive rebound with time to advance it, but Lovington senior guard Chris Perez poked the ball loose and c...

  • Melrose girls finally get best of Logan

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 29, 2020

LOGAN — The Melrose and Logan girls continued their longtime rivalry on Friday night in the District 6-1A tournament finals. This time, it was the Lady Buffs’ turn to come out on top. The top two teams in Class 1A, Melrose used a 19-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to erase a 10-point deficit and post a 45-37 win over the Lady Longhorns. When pairings for the state tournament are announced today, it’s likely that Logan, which had won the first three meetings this season, will remain the No. 1 seed with Melro...
