  • Law reducing paperwork approved

The New Mexican Days remaining in session: 21 Penalizing paperwork: The House has approved a measure (HB367) that would reduce the amount of paperwork that state agencies can send to lawmakers. It puts some teeth into a current law that puts a five-page limit on what agencies can send to lawmakers, with a few exceptions....

PORTALES — Cameron pitcher Brad Bichel didn’t need much run support Friday, but got more than enough. Then the Aggies clobbered six home runs in the nightcap, posting a 10-run third and a seven-run sixth, for a 21-14 win. Bichel (4-0)... Full story

  • Editorial: Relationships don't need federal approval

Two consenting adults agree to have sexual relations. Police and prosecutors — and maybe even federal agents — stand ready to pounce. Two consenting adults want to put a stamp of permanence on their relationship. Legislators and lobbyists brace for constitutional rewrites. In the first example, the government acts if money changes hands. Whether the trigger gets pulled in case No. 2 depends on the number of genders involved. • Wonder why? Consult almanac

You can catch a bird by salting its tail but if you salt your wife’s hairdo you’re liable to catch a backhand across the chops. I know, I tried it this week but managed to avoid her right hook. We’ve both become a bit near-sighted in our middle years and after pumping the salt shaker a few times over the potato salad she was preparing she shook it over her hand to see if anything was coming out. I thought I would demonstrate that, yes, I had just filled the shaker and salt was coming out ... by salting the back of her head.... Full story

  • Government's actions aren't progressive

Here is a sad, undisputed fact: About 350,000 rather wealthy people at “the top” own as much as the entire bottom half of the remaining 300-plus million people in America, the land of the free. In a nutshell, what has happened is we have pursued a living within a system that blatantly milks the productivity of the many for the benefit of the few ... because the few are running the system....

  • Twelve-year-olds capable of crime

Connie Belcher needs to open her eyes (“Shooting woman acted irresponsibly” in last Sunday’s letters to the editor). So much in our world has gone crazy — 12-year-olds have beaten people to death and who knows the age of the others running with the 12-year-old when he knocked on this young lady’s door. I don’t believe she is being famed for shooting through a door — she was protecting herself and her loved one and she certainly wasn’t looking for 15 minutes of fame when the intruders knocked on her door. Who k...
