Burlington Northern Santa Fe officials estimate about five hours of work will require closing down the travelway, but it should be open this afternoon. Joe Sloan of BNSF’s public affairs office said rail was pulled about 7 a.m. today, and the expectation was to have the work done around noon. With the Prince Street Overpass closed for repairs, the Norris crossing and the Hull Street overpass have faced heavier traffic since August. “They put it... Full story

PORTALES - It's amazing what a little bit of time at home, and a pair of blowouts, can do to your district chances. Just a week ago, the Portales boys basketball team was fighting for third place in District 4-4A. Thanks to a pair of big wins at the Ram Athletic Center Tuesday and Friday, they enter the 4-4A tournament as the second seed. The Rams rolled past Artesia 68-48, leading by double digits for almost all the second half and posting a crucial district win. Then on...

CLOVIS — In less than 15 years, Touchstone Golf has gone from a dream of PGA professional Steve Harker and his brother Doug to boasting more than 40 courses throughout the country. It works, Regional Manager Brian Melody said, because the golf, the golf course and its patrons come first. “This might be the last time you hear Touchstone Golf,” Melody said at Thursday night’s Clovis City Commission meeting. “It will be Colonial Park Golf Course.” The commission was sold, voting 8-0 to enter negotiations that would make Coloni...

CLOVIS — The Clovis boys basketball team likes playing at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. The Wildcats like having their crowd behind them, like feeding off the energy. They certainly like not having to ride hours through desert or plains to play games. With Friday’s 49-44 victory over Roswell in the regular-season finale for both teams, Clovis bought itself some more time at the Rock. The Wildcats assured themselves of the District 4-5A tournament’s No. 2 seed, meaning they’ll play a district semifinal at home on Thursday. And, th...

LOVINGTON — The Portales and Clovis tennis teams expected to spend Friday and Saturday facing off in the Lovington Remix Tournament. But inclement weather offered its own remix, and the tournament organizers decided to try to squeeze all of the matches into Friday. The Portales girls took first in the tournament, while Portales’ girls finished fourth. In boys action, Clovis was second behind tournament host Lovington, while a shorthanded Ram boys team did well but lost most matches due to default losses. “I was very happy...

ROSWELL — Clovis’ girls basketball team knew the stakes. The Lady Wildcats needed to beat Roswell on the road Friday to avoid making another two-hour trek there just four days later. And they came through, pulling away to win 39-24, which earned them a first-round home game in the District 4-5A tournament on Tuesday. The Lady Wildcats’ first-round opponent? The very same Roswell team they defeated on Friday night. “I was glad to get this win so we didn’t have to play at Roswell Tuesday,” Clovis head coach Jeff Reed said....
