Most of the feedback I receive from readers is positive; a minority is hostile. Here is a sampling of the latter: "You are disgusting and immoral." "You must accept Him; there is no other way. The choice is up to you. Choose wisely." "You are in good company with Al Jezeera." "People choose their eternal dwelling place! YOU have chosen yours." "If I was your editor, this column would have never hit the presses." Criticism comes with the privilege of column writing and does not faze me. If critics knew me, it might modify...

An extended drought that has included the hottest and driest 24-month period on record in New Mexico has led to a historic low water level at one area lake. Several other area lakes are well below capacity, officials said. The water level at Conchas Lake in San Miguel County is at 4,155 feet, which is 45 feet below the spillway and the lowest the lake has been since the record set in 1954 when it was at 4,155.80, said Jason Latham, Army Corp of Engineers at Conchas. It doesn't appear the lakes will be recharged anytime soon....
One of the most important things in the success of a marriage is spousal training. Many stories exist when a "cowboy type" (male or female) marries someone with an urban upbringing. Usually it is the male heir to the ranch who goes to A&M, falls in love with a city girl and brings her home. Mother and Dad get a feelin' pretty quick whether the "tryout" is going to fit in the family. Maybe she's funny or loves kids, rolls up her sleeves and does the dishes and really appears to care for their lovesick son. Or immediately...
The Ramos family of Clovis can literally say nearly 240 pairs of hands have touched their home on North Thornton Street. Volunteers from Curry and Roosevelt counties as well as Cannon Air Force Base donated their time and skills to build the house for Roman and Erica Ramos and their two children through Habitat for Humanity of Roosevelt and Curry Counties. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that builds affordable homes for low-income families in the area and...
PORTALES —It didn't take long for Eastern New Mexico University's men to break open a tight game on Saturday. Junior guard Rodney Blackmon and freshman forward Lawrence Domingo scored 21 points each and junior guard Rodney Love posted his sixth double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds as the Greyhounds rode a six-minute, 16-0 run in the second half for an 86-70 Lone Star Conference win Incarnate Word at Greyhound Arena. It's the first time this season the H...
Incarnate Word couldn't find the range from 3-point distance for virtually the entire game Saturday. When the Cardinals desperately needed one, they got it on a fortunate bounce. Junior guard Katie Novak had her shot bounce high of the rim and fall through with 1:04 left in regulation — ending the team's 0-for-12 performance to that point — then senior guard Katy Cooke forced overtime by hitting a trey — on her second attempt of the possession — with 28 seconds to go. UIW got a three-point play from 6-foot-2 junior...

Eastern New Mexico University's baseball team is off to the best start in the program's history, and it's pretty obvious why — solid hitting and clutch pitching. CMI correspondent: Joshua LuceroENMU shortstop Luis Quinones attempts to snag a ball in the hole hit by Metro State's Alex Schrupp during the seventh inning of Saturday's first game at Greyhound Field. The Greyhounds swept the Roadrunners 11-1, improving to 11-1 for the season. The Greyhounds got a five-inning...
After having a 78-yard punt return nullified by penalty in the opening period Saturday night, Clovis High grad Phillip Williams responded with third-quarter touchdown runs of 1 and 17 yards to help the Curry County Cats beat the West Texas Outlaws 21-6 in the Professional American Football League opener for both teams at Leon Williams Stadium. The Lubbock-based Outlaws scored on a 16-yard pass play in the first quarter, but the Cats' Chris Lewis blocked the PAT kick. Williams' TDs gave Curry County a 14-6 lead through three...

Rodney Blackmon, a cat-quick junior guard from Los Angeles, is averaging more than 16 points a contest this season for the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds. On his 2012-13 resume are three game-winning shots and, in one recent win over Cameron, a stretch where he scored 18 of his team's last 23 points. After playing high school ball at David Starr Jordan in L.A., Blackmon attended West Los Angeles college before transferring to Eastern — where he is a psychology major. How do you like Portales, compared to where you...
