  • Rights are to be asserted, defended

Often when I hear people speak of “rights” they seem to be saying rights are something others are required to respect. Or even give them. link Kent McManigal The truth is rights are something you need to assert. They are nothing if you don’t defend them from all threats. A right is something you don’t need to ask permission, from anyone, to do. It is the opposite of a privilege. Rights don’t come from other people, nor from groups of other people or from any documents... Full story

  • Thank you for bringing us a little heaven

    Joan Clayton

Almost 21 years ago, Joan Clayton marched into the Portales News-Tribune offices and pitched an idea for an inspirational column. She’d write it weekly, she said, for free. “I don’t write for money,” friends have heard her say many times since then. “I write for Jesus.” Then-Publisher Lone Beasley did not know Clayton at the time, “but I took it on faith that she could do it,” he said. She could do it, alright. Two decades later, she’s written eight books, more than 175 articles for multiple anthologies, 10 essays for the “Ch... Full story

  • Inspired search turned up movie gold mine

    Alisa Boswell

A conversation I had at work recently about 1950s and 1960s movies inspired me to do a search on YouTube regarding certain genres from that era. link Alisa Boswell What I found was a gold mine of full-length movies ranging from the late 1930s to the early 1960s and titled play lists, such as the Mystery Murder Suspense 1950-1959 play list, which includes movies a little over an hour long with exciting titles like “Woman on the Run.” As I’ve mentioned before, I was raise...

  • Leaving you with these last remaining thoughts

    Joan Clayton

Change can sometimes be hard. We get used to the way things are and we want to keep the old and the familiar. link Joan Clayton But God uses change in our lives to help us grow and mature and to be able to adapt and to learn life lessons that he reveals to us through change. Our attitude toward change makes all the difference. If we embrace change and recognize that God will be with us through those changes, we can be full of joy and happiness even though we may not want or...

    Curtis Shelburne

It’s just a fact, but a fact it is, that the teachers who most influenced my life early on were Methodists. San Jacinto Elementary in Amarillo, Texas, was evidently a hotbed of Methodism. Or maybe it was just that my primary school path there was colored by the presence of three of them. Someday I’ll write another column and give Baptists and Church of Christ folks and Lutherans, etc., some well-deserved good words for their blessing in my life. But today, these fifty yea...
