  • Clovis Christian squeaks by Grady

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Feb 18, 2019

CLOVIS - Clovis Christian's gymnasium is decorated with championship banners from the not-so-distant past. The earliest only go back to Bush 43's second term, the most recent to a 2010 Six-man state football championship. The years since have been a little lean for the Eagles, but Thursday night, Clovis Christian's girls basketball team - six players' strong that it was - earned some glory by posting its first District 6-1A victory of the season, 42-40 over Grady. The best...

  • Athlete earns honors

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 16, 2019

BY THE STAFF OF THE NEWS LUBBOCK — The third time is the charm for Ezra Bagwell. The Eastern New Mexico senior, chosen for his third consecutive Lone Star Conference indoor track and field academic team, was also named the men’s academic athlete of the year prior to the two-day LSC championships at Texas Tech University. Bagwell, a senior electronic engineer from Clayton, was one of two Greyhound athletes named to the men’s and women’s teams — a total of 22 athletes. Bagwell was one of three athletes to garner a repeat se...

  • Hounds grab spot

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Feb 16, 2019

PORTALES - Getting in is hopefully just the beginning. With one more big second-half run, one more big shot in the closing seconds and one more dominant performance from senior transfer Chukuka Emili, Eastern New Mexico University's men clinched a Lone Star Conference playoff berth with a 76-72 victory Thursday night over Texas A&M-Kingsville. Senior guard Nick Brown had 16 points, along with the nail-in-the coffin free throws in the final seconds, and Emili had 15 points on...

  • Lady 'Cats fall

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Feb 16, 2019

CLOVIS - The Clovis girls basketball team's season has been kind of like 'It's a Wonderful Life' in reverse. Minus the angel trying to earn his wings, the Lady Wildcats have seen snippets of how good things could be. Though they're 8-17 overall, 1-4 in District 4-5A, the Lady 'Cats have displayed promise here and there, had chances if only they could get a stop or make a little run, cash in on more free-throw opportunities. If only. Friday night's regular-season home finale ag...

  • Push to the finish

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 16, 2019

The Portales High girls basketball team is hoping to make its move in the second half of District 4-4A play, after ending the first half tied with Goddard and Artesia at 1-1 for first place. If the season plays out like last week’s games, the Rams’ chances are pretty good. Portales broke open a pair of tight games with big third quarters, topping Lovington 60-47 and Goddard 53-41 on the road. With coach Wade Fraze suspended for a game Tuesday due to his ejection the prior game at Artesia, Portales wrestled control of the cont...

  • Hounds dominate against A&M

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Feb 16, 2019

PORTALES - Start strong, finish stronger. That's been the mantra for the Eastern New Mexico women's basketball team. And though the Greyhounds haven't always succeeded, they've done it enough to find themselves near the top of the Lone Star Conference standings. A dominant effort from start to finish Thursday gave the Greyhounds an 80-64 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville and a chance to tie Angelo State for the LSC's No. 1 spot on Saturday. Treyanna Clay and Alivia Lewis, the...

  • Frustrating week for Clovis boys hoops team

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 16, 2019

HOBBS — Friday marked the season’s second installment of the Clovis-Hobbs boys basketball rivalry, this one played at Hobbs High School. But unfortunately for Clovis, the second installment didn’t go nearly as well as the first. Two weeks after the Wildcats won their home matchup with Hobbs, they were beaten by the Eagles, 84-74, Friday night. It was the Wildcats’ second District 4-5A loss of the season after they began the week 3-0 in district. They fell to 17-8 overall with Friday’s defeat. Hobbs improved to 19-6 overall,...

  • Rambelles win LSC opener

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Feb 16, 2019

PORTALES - The Eastern New Mexico softball team made a convincing case Friday it had no plans to be a pushover in the Lone Star Conference. Angelo State, however, was pretty convincing itself showing why it was the No. 6 team in the country. A solid relief effort from Victoria Vasquez set the stage, and the Rambelles scored the game's final eight runs over three innings to claim an 11-3 win in the LSC opener for both teams. The visiting Rambelles pounded out 11 hits,...

  • Shutdown delays property sale

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Feb 16, 2019

CLOVIS — While the longest shutdown in the history of the federal government ended late last month, its effects are still being felt by the Eastern Plains Council of Governments. EPCOG Executive Director Sandy Chancey told the board at its meeting on Wednesday that the closing of its rental property sale to J.L. Gray Co. was delayed due to the shutdown. Chancey said the projected closing date was Dec. 31 but was delayed because the company is utilizing federal funds for the purchase and was in the middle of the loan a...
