  • 'Big dog' can be measured in terms of personality

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Dec 5, 2020

If you can’t run with the big dogs you just as well stay home on the porch. Those that read my column all the time know my pets are a bit of the Mutt and Jeff persuasion. Ranger, the boy dog, tips the scale at a little over 75 pounds and the female Maggie is 12 pounds. They don’t always have their roles and identities straight though. The big dog is laid back and pretty easy going, he’s just pretty dang loud when he decides to talk with you. I’m not sure I’ve ever really he...

In the midst of a pandemic, the services provided by local non-profits are more needed than ever, while the donations that make those services happen have declined, according to officials operating the organizations. "I think most of our non-profits have maintained the ability to serve people, but for some, that's not true. For some, things have been put on hold in big ways," said Erinn Burch, executive director of United Way of Eastern New Mexico. "I think the biggest impact...

  • Muleshoe squads dominate

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Dec 5, 2020

MULESHOE — You could say that both games on Friday night between Muleshoe and Amarillo Highland Park were a little rough around the edges. Not that it really mattered much, especially after the early going. The Lady Mules held Highland Park scoreless for nearly seven minutes at the start and cruised to a 58-32 victory, while the Mules also dominated early en route to a 41-29 win. It was the start of a busy weekend for Muleshoe squads, who were slated to host Springlake-Earth in a Saturday afternoon twin bill. The Lady M...

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Dec 5, 2020

There’s almost no one in the United States — or the world, for that matter — who hasn’t had to make significant adjustments due to the coronavirus pandemic. That certainly includes the New Mexico Activities Association, which for the third time this fall has redone its sports calendar in hopes of athletes being able to compete during the 2020-21 school year. Originally, the NMAA planned to start volleyball, cross country and some golf in October, with the rest of the year’s 13 sponsored activities going off in the spring seme...

  • Opinion: Erasing white voices not answer

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated columnist|Updated Dec 5, 2020

People might get tired of stories about my father Ted and his summer in Mississippi. They might roll their eyes when I, once again, write about how he faced hostility and the KKK during his time in the places that have become legendary for their ferocious efforts at silencing Black voices and votes. There are many out there who never heard of my father, but who are doing their damndest to make sure that people like him are silenced and forgotten. They are doing this because...

    Michael Shannon, Syndicated columnist|Updated Dec 5, 2020

Christmas online sales are predicted to increase 33 percent to a record of $189 billion, according to the wizards at Adobe Analytics. Merry Winter Break Jeff Bezos! What this means for consumers is you’re being drafted into the Gig Economy. The completely oblivious professional liars in Amazon corporate PR explain, “The holidays are typically overwhelming — between shopping for gifts, preparing family meals and getting the house ready for guests — but for many, this season may look a little different.” I’ll say. Amazon want...

  • Opinion: Golf is a COVID-19 safe activity

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated columnist|Updated Dec 5, 2020

The state of California has felt like a minimum-security prison for eight months. In the name of fighting the pandemic and preventing our hospitals from being overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients, the politicians and public health experts have told us “non-essential” Americans where we could go, where we could eat and where and how we could gather with our friends, strangers or fellow worshipers. They’ve slowly managed to outlaw any social activity and fun that brings ordinary peo...

  • Opinion: Georgia fraud claims beyond bizarre

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated columnist|Updated Dec 5, 2020

There is no evidence that Lin Wood and Sidney Powell are secretly working for the Democratic National Committee, but no one has definitively disproved it, either. That’s the kind of conspiratorial reasoning that the Wood-Powell duo, with their deep commitment to wild and unfalsifiable charges, might apply to themselves. The two Trump-allied lawyers have made themselves into wrecking balls against the Republican Party of Georgia, whose top elected officials, they allege, are in...

  • Opinion: Newspaper columnist championed liberty

    Orange County Register|Updated Dec 5, 2020

Born in Philadelphia on March 21, 1936 and raised in the Richard Allen housing projects, Williams never allowed himself to be a victim of his circumstances. Williams always believed in the value of hard work and the fundamental promise of America. After being drafted into the military, W...
