LAS VEGAS, N.M. — After one of the all-time collapses the day before, Eastern New Mexico University's baseball team did a complete about-face on Saturday. After blowing a 15-0 lead in a 22-16 loss to New Mexico Highlands on Friday, the Greyhounds made two much smaller leads stand up with stout relief pitching in a 5-2, 6-5 sweep of the Cowboys, improving to 6-1 for the season. Both games were seven innings. The teams finish off the four-game set with a nine-inning contest at noon today. Right-hander Ryan Pruitt (1-0) r... Full story
DENTON, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team is now positioned for a spot in next month's eight-team Lone Star Conference tournament. It was hardly routine, though. The Zias saw a five-point lead slip away in the final 20 seconds, staying alive when Texas Woman's Toree Mason missed the back end of a two-shot foul with one second left, then outscored the Pioneers 14-3 in the final three minutes of overtime for an 80-70 victory on Saturday. With the win, the Zias (6-18, 5-11 LSC) moved a game a...

Sievers, a forward, was one of six players signed this week to national letters of intent for next year by Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer coach Todd Padgett. The others are defender Breann Atencio of Albuquerque High; defender/midfielder Chelsey Chandler of Frisco, Texas; forward/defender Grace Tolson of Dallas; midfielder Sydney...
I was probably late to the game in figuring out that our most of our perceptions of others is pretty superficial. A good example are those infamous photos of tackily dressed Wal-Mart people. I do not know why they dress that way, but I am sure that each still cares as much about their life as I do. Their emotions, longings and dreams echo my own. Most have little control over their physical appearance, aptitudes or upbringing. Given a choice, they would be better-looking and from more functional families with more money. If...

Harry Miller wasn't a man of many hobbies away from the hardwood. "My dad was a basketball coach," youngest son Gary Miller said. "It was basketball. When it's not basketball season, you're on the road recruiting or you do camps. We would tag along in some cases, and Mom would go with him." But when he stepped back into his home, he was Dad, and Coach Miller could wait. Harry Miller, who coached Eastern New Mexico University to the NAIA national championship in 1969, died...
The late Frankye King dedicated 20 years to the New Mexico Ag Expo to ensure that it continued to deliver quality information to producers and farmers to better their operations. In its 21st year, Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce Director Karl Terry, one of the organizers of the expo, found it appropriate to dedicate this year's expo to someone who gave so much to it. "She was there when they formed the Ag Expo 21 years ago," said Terry of the long-time committee member. "She was the type of person who was assigned a job... Full story

I traded for a new horse a while back. He's a buckskin, 11 years old by his teeth, no papers, 15 hands and sound. It was not long after my friend, Tom, had been diagnosed with cancer. It was a bad one. He was younger than me and, by outward appearances, a healthy man. I included him on my prayer list and called occasionally. I put my new horse into the string. He had come from a ranch in California. They said, "Try him out. Don't know much about him except he's supposed to be gentle." Tom's condition continued to crumble....

DEXTER — The Portales Rams stayed with highly-regarded Dexter for better than a half Saturday night. In the end, the Demons' 3-point shooting — 12-of-24 — simply proved to be too much. Senior guard Kevin Bonner scored 13 of his 30 points in the third quarter and Dexter, ranked second in Class 2A, extended its winning streak to 16 games with an 82-64 win over the Rams. Bonner had five 3-pointers in the game for the Demons (20-3), while junior forward David Lopez had six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points and junior guard...
